Ice Pact: NHL, NBC Extend, Expand Alliance With Discover Financial Services

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News ServiceNovember 18, 2019: The NHL has signed a multi-year extension of its U.S. partnership with Discover Financial Services that includes Discover maintaining its status as the "official credit card of the NHL in the U.S." and adds Discover as the “official bank of the NHL” in the U.S.
The expanded partnership also now designates Discover as title partner of NBC Sports’ Hockey Day in America, a "celebration of the impact hockey has had in the U.S."
Discover has been a partner with NBC Sports for the event.
Financial terms of the pact were not revealed.
Discover became the NHL’s first official U.S. financial partner in 2010.
Scotiabank is the league’s financial partner in Canada.
This is the second key extension for the NHL this month, which last week renewed its partnership with Honda as the league’s official automotive partner in the U.S. and Canada.
“Discover is a deeply committed and best-in-class NHL partner that delivers creative activations for our fan base and will continue extending and growing the league’s reach,” Kyle McMann, NHL group vp-business development., said via the league.
“We’re thrilled to expand our partnership into Discover’s growing lending and retail banking business where we will build new activations, while continuing to deliver world class content programming like Discover Day with the Cup and now Discover Hockey Day in America that hockey fans love.”
Among its activation, Discover remains an official partner of the NHL Winter Classic, NHL Stadium Series and NHL All-Star Weekend, including sponsoring one skill during the 2020 NHL All-Star Skills in St. Louis.Discover will also continue as presenting sponsor of the ‘“Day With The Cup” video series, in which a “deserving group or individual, who serves as a champion for the hockey community and leader in their local community” are awarded with a surprise visit with the Stanley Cup.
Discover is continuing its engagement with hockey fans of all 31 NHL teams by offering its NHL Discover it card.
Discover said it is planning pieces of content throughout the year across the NHL’s and its own platforms to “highlight the impact and growth of hockey across the United States and showcase the importance that Hockey is For Everyone.”

Hockey Day in America is scheduled for Feb.16, 2020, with a triple-header on NBC and NBCSN featuring the Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers vs. Boston Bruins and Nashville Predators vs. St. Louis Blues.
