DirecTV Calls GOAT-Busters Ortiz, A-Rod, Junior, Big Unit In New Campaign

By Barry Janoff

April 22, 2022: The "Get Your TV Together" multi-media campaign launched last year from DirecTV has featured G.O.A.T. tennis star Serena Williams.

New creative in the multi-platform effort ups the G.O.A.T. ante with four former MLB players who have been in the “Greatest of All Time” conversation: Ken Griffey Jr., Randy “The Big Unit” Johnson, David “Big Papi” Ortiz and Alex “A-Rod” Rodriguez.

The anchor spot, "GOAT-Busters", opens with a DirecTV consumer explaining how, with DirecTV Stream, they can get DirecTV and on-demand together: Baseball. Ghostbusters. Baseball. Ghostbusters.

In her spots, Williams morphs into Wonder Woman (with a guest shot from John McEnroe) and Neo from The Matrix, respectively.

Here, the four MLB All-Stars become the lead characters from the Ghostbusters franchise, taking on an oversized Cincinnati Reds mascot Mr. Redlegs (playing the part of Muffin Man from the first film), terrorizing fans at a ballpark.

A second spot is a "GOAT-Busters informercial", with the ballplayers pitching DirecTV service directly to consumers who are haunted by their cable service and notice strange, frightening things on their cable bill.

The campaign includes TV, digital, social media and what was described as an “augmented reality GOATBusters game that will be available via Snapchat and Facebook filters, including a special version when attending MLB games.”

Lead agency is TBWA\Chiat\Day

“Last August, the initial version of 'Get Your TV Together' so accurately captured the entertainment magic, as well as cheeky nature of the DirecTV Stream brand, that we are continuing the franchise this spring,” Vince Torres, DirecTV CMO, said via the company.

“As the TV world continues to get complicated, I think viewers will really see our passion to bring sports and entertainment back together, all in one place. And it doesn’t hurt to have the help of Ghostbusters and some of baseball’s greatest icons.”

In the lead spot, the four players show up in the vehicle from Ghostbusters, an ECTO-1 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor ambulance, but with a GOAT-4 license plate.”

"It’s good to be back,” says Ortiz as they exit the onto the playing field. “That’s one foul ball,” Johnson says looking at the giant Reds mascot.

A voiceover offers, “Get your TV together with the best of live and on-demand: DirecTV Stream."

In the Infomercial. Johnson asks, “Are you haunted by your cable service?” Rodriguez asks, “Have you noticed strange, frightening things on your cable bill?” Griffey Jr. wants to know, “Do you experience feelings of dread when you pass by your cable box?” Ortiz says, "If the answer is yes . . .  Who are you gonna call?”

In unison, they offer, “DIrecTV Stream.”

Ortiz is part of the National Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2022. Johnson was inducted into the Hall in 2015, Griffey Jr. in 2016. Rodriguez was on the Hall of Fame ballot for the first time in 2021.

All four were members of the Seattle Mariners, although not at the same time (Ortiz was part of their farm system).
