Shohei Reigns On: Dodgers Star Has MLB Most Popular Jersey At All-Star Break 2024

July 12, 2024: In his first season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Shohei Ohtani picked up where he left off in 2023 with the Los Angles Angels.
Ohtani finished the 2023 season with the most popular player jersey in MLB for the year, with his No. 17 Los Angeles Angels attire topping the list for the first time in his career.
He had appeared in the Top Ten after two prior seasons (2018, 2021).
Now, entering the All-Star break, the Dodgers star ranks at the top of the MLB most popular jersey list for the first half of the 2024 season.
Ohtani also remains the first Japanese player to lead the list since MLB and the MLB Players Assn. began releasing jersey rankings in 2010.
Ohtani’s jersey surpassed all MLB players not only in the U.S., but Japan and worldwide.
Figures are based on sales from MLBShop.com of Nike jerseys since Opening Day. Sales figures were not released.
Following Ohtani on the most popular player jersey list by MLB and the MLBPA, are the top All-Star vote-getters in each league: Bryce Harper (No. 2) of the Philadelphia Phillies and Aaron Judge (No. 3) of the New York Yankees.
The Top Five also includes Ohtani’s teammate, No. 4 Mookie Betts, and No. 5 Ronald Acuña Jr., of the Atlanta Braves.
in his first season with the Yankees, Juan Soto's jersey comes in at No. 6.
The Dodgers lead with three players in the Top 20: with Freddie Freeman (No. 20) joining Ohtani and Betts.
The Phillies for the first time since 2011 have have multiple players in the Top 20, with Trea Turner (No. 13) joining Harper.
After their first appearances last season on the Top 20 chart, Cincinnati Reds star Elly De La Cruz (up from No. 16 to No. 15) and Baltimore Orioles Adley Rutschman (up from No. 20 to No. 16) continue to rise in jersey sales.
MLB said nine of the players making up the 20 highest selling jerseys were born outside of the U.S., hailing from Japan, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela and Puerto Rico.
