Now Serving: U.S. Open Record $75 Million Prize Money, Puts Activation In Motion

By Barry Janoff

UPDATED August 15, 2024: Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka (including the 2018 U.S. Open) and 2019 U.S. Open winner Bianca Andreescu are among the eight women's singles Open wild cards, joining Americans Amanda Anisimova, McCartney Kessler, Alexa Noel and Iva Jovic,; France's Chloe Paquet; and Australia's Taylah Preston.

The men's wild cards include former U.S. Open champions Dominic Thiem  (2020) and Stan Wawrinka (2016); Americans Christopher Eubanks, Zachary Svajda, Learner Tien and Matthew Forbes; France's Alexandre Muller; and Australia's Tristan Schoolkate.

The 2024 U.S. Open Men's and Women's player field will be revealed Aug. 22.

UPDATED August 14, 2024: All four days of the Women’s and Men’s 2024 U.S. Open Qualifying tournament will stream live on ESPN+ and air on ESPNews and, for the first time, on ESPN2 Aug. 19-22.

The qualifiers feature 128 men and 128 women competing for the final 16 slots, respectively, in each of the 2024 US Open singles draws.

August 7, 2024: The fourth and final tennis Grand Slam of the year will also be the most lucrative, with the U.S. Tennis Assn. saying that total prize money for the U.S. Open would rise to a record $75 million, a 15% increase from 2023.

All rounds played this year will see an increase in the prize money awarded from last year.

The men's and women's singles champions will see a 20% jump to $3.6 million each — marking the 51st season of equal prize money for ATP Tour men and Hologic WTA Tour women at the U.S. Open.

Last year, singles winners Novak Djokovic and Coco Gauff each took home $3 million out of a total $65 million

Although this year's overall prize money is a record, the U.S. Open singles prize record was $3.85 million that went to Rafael Nadal and Bianca Andreescu each in 2019.

Nadal, who has won four of his 22 career Grand Slams at the U.S. Open, but has not played there since 2021, will also miss this year’s event, posting to social media that his next event would be the Laver Cup in Berlin (Sept. 20-24).

This year’s runner-up will earn $1.8 million, the semifinalists $1 million.

By comparison, Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek singles champions each won more than $2.6 million at the recently concluded Roland-Garros Paris event from a pool of $57.1 million.

Wimbledon’s total prize money rose to a tournament record $64 million, with singles champions Alcaraz and Barbora Krejčíková each earning $3.45 million

Australian Open 2024 singles champions Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka each won $2.08 million from a pool of $57.8 million.

The USTA also said that with no U.S. Open Wheelchair Championships presented by Deloitte being played in 2024 due to the Paris Paralympic Games, it would “provide the players that would have been entered into the U.S. Open via direct acceptance with a player grant to ensure that these players are receiving the equivalent of prize money as compensation.”

This year’s U.S. Open is scheduled for Aug. 26-Sept. 8 (qualifying matches Aug. 19-22) in the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Flushing, NY.

The women’s singles final is scheduled for Sept. 7, the men’s final Sept. 8.

U.S. Open partners include American Express, Aperol 1919, Cadillac, Chase, Chubb, Deloitte, Dobel Tequila, Emirates, Evian, Face, Grey Goose, Heineken, IBM, IHG, JPMorgan, La Roche Posay, LavAzza, just signed Moet & Chandon, Mount Sinai, Polo Ralph Lauren, Rolex, Tiffany, Washington DC Tourism and Wilson.

U.S. Open multi-media marketing is anchored by 30-second spots, "Spectacular Awaits ft. Fat Joe."

ESPN, whose platforms have covered the U.S. Open since 2009 and exclusively since 2014, has its own campaign, “Primetime At The 2024 U.S. Open,” touting its tournament coverage and that the U.S. Open Men’s Singles Championship would air live on ABC, the first time that ABC will air the match (2 PM ET).

A live 60-minute preview show will lead into the live match.

Last year, ABC aired U.S. Open matches live for the first time, during the Round of 16

The Men’s Championship will also be available on ESPN Deportes (Spanish) and ESPN+ (English and Spanish). ESPN2 will air an encore of the match that day (9 PM ET).

“The U.S. Open is one of the signature events on the sports calendar, and we are pleased to bring its culminating match, the Men’s Final, to tennis fans via ABC,” Tim Bunnell, ESPN svp-programming and acquisitions, said via the network.

Tennis Channel will again have multi-platform coverage of the U.S. Open, including on-site presence, replays, interviews, news, schedules, stats and features.

Tennis Channel Live at the U.S. Open, the network’s daily lead-in show, premieres Aug. 26, beginning two hours per day of news, analysis, highlights and special reports most mornings of the two-week competition.

U.S. Open Fan Week, scheduled for Aug. 19-25, includes Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day Saturday, Aug. 24, and Open Practice Sunday, Aug. 25  in the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Flushing, NY.

On Aug. 23, New York City DJ D-Nice will headline the first U.S. Open Block Party, a free nighttime festival style celebration.

The event takes place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center’s Fountain Plaza and will feature  DJ Millie followed by a performance by D-Nice, all hosted by Z100’s Crystal and Maxwell.

(The event is free but requires a ticket to gain access to the site. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-serve basis through Ticketmaster.)

“We are excited for fans to experience the U.S Open Block Party as we continue to expand U.S. Open Fan Week,” Nicole Kankam, USTA managing director, Pro Tennis Marketing and Entertainment, said via the organization.

“The U.S. Open has an incredible tradition of bringing music and entertainment to the grounds of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center and D-Nice will surely put on a show that the community will enjoy.”

Among other scheduled events are U.S. Open Mixed Madness in Arthur Ashe Stadium Aug. 20; the Stars of the Open exhibition in Ashe Aug. 21, which benefits the USTA Foundation; and Flavors of the Open food-tasting event Aug. 22. All of these events require s separate ticket purchase.

The U.S. Open said it “takes pride in being a leader in equality and inclusion,” and will again this year feature HBCU Live at the U.S. Open celebration (Aug. 28) and Pride Day (Aug. 29) “among the many on-site activations that will celebrate that tennis is open for all.”
