MLB Takes Pause For Cause Marketing During Houston-Philadelphia World Series

UPDATED November 2, 2002: MLB, Stand Up To Cancer and MasterCard will continue the annual Fall Classic tradition of an in-game SU2C moment — which dates back to 2011 — in Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park tonight during Game 4.
First Lady Jill Biden is scheduled to join players, umpires, coaches and fans as they all hold up placards with the names of loved ones affected by the disease written on them.
The moment will take place after the 5th inning and will air live on Fox.
MLB and its 30 Clubs are the founding donors of SU2C, committing more than $50 million, to date, to SU2C’s innovative cancer research programs.
Dr. Biden is attending as part of the Biden Administration’s Cancer Moonshot.
UPDATED October 31, 2022: MLB today unveiled the ceremonial and off-field activities for Game 3 of the 2022 World Series presented by Capital One, with the Philadelphia Phillies hosting the Houston Astros tonight (Oct. 31) in Citizens Bank Park (Fox, 8 PM ET).
A group of Philadelphia Sports Champions are scheduled to throw the ceremonial first pitches tonight, including:
• Mike Schmidt, Baseball Hall of Famer, 3X National League MVP and 1980 World Series Champion with the Phillies.
• Julius “Dr. J” Erving Basketball Hall of Famer, and 76ers 1983 NBA Finals champion.
• Bernie Parent, Hockey Hall of Famer, Flyers Legend and 1973-1974 & 1974-1975 Stanley Cup champion.
• Brandon Graham, Philadelphia Eagles DE and Super Bowl LII champion.
Singer-songwriter Madison Watkins will perform the National Anthem.
Justin Turner of the Los Angeles Dodgers has been named the 2022 recipient of the Roberto Clemente Award and will be honored prior to the game.
The award is presented annually to the player who “best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.”
It is determined by the MLB commissioner, Clemente’s children, former players, journalists and voting by fans. He will be presented with his trophy by MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, Jr., the Clemente Family, and Andy Navarrete, evp Capital One.
October 27, 2022: When it comes to the World Series, the jewel event is just as much about cause marketing and honoring traditions for MLB as it is about playing baseball.
The 2022 Fall Classic between the Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies will be no exception.
MLB today unveiled ceremonial and off-field activities for Game 1 (Oct. 28) and Game 2 (Oct. 29) of the 2022 World Series presented by Capital One, both in Houston’s Minute Maid Park.
In celebration of 60 years of baseball in Houston, several Astros Legends will participate in ceremonial first pitches, including:
• Game 1: Terry Puhl, a key contributor in the 1980 NLCS vs. the Phillies and 2022 inductee into the Astros Hall of Fame.
• Game Two: Hall of Famer Craig Biggio will throw the ceremonial first pitch to fellow Hall of Famer Jeff Bagwell.
The National Anthem for Game 1 will be sung by Eric Burton, the six-time Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and Black Pumas co-founder.
The National Anthem for Game 2 will be sung by Little Big Town, the Grammy, ACM, CMA, AMA and Emmy Award-winning group.
Before Game 1, MLB and the Astros will unveil plans to support Buckner International, a ministry that protects vulnerable children, strengthens families, and transforms lives for generations.
For Game 2, MLB said it has invited dozens of youth baseball and softball players who participate in a variety of MLB-led and/or localized community programs all around the country.
These student-athletes will take part in a special Play Ball event on Oct. 29 in the Astros MLB Youth Academy in Sylvester Turner Park.
Later, they will be recognized at Minute Maid Park during pre-game ceremonies and attend the game as guests of MLB.
In keeping with the youth recognition theme of Game 2, MLB and the Astros will provide with Make-A-Wish a special experience for five young fans — including two Astros fans — to have their wishes granted to attend the World Series with their families.
Game 2 activation is also scheduled to include the fourth season of the Jennie Finch Empowerment Award presented by Arm & Hammer, It will honor four young women who "demonstrated leadership characteristics on and off the field."
In addition, there will be a presentation of the MLB Youth Academy Network “Youth of the Year”; and Chevrolet’s “
MLB Develops MVP” and “Play Ball Player of the Month.”
Game 4 Nov. 1 in Citizens Bank Park Philadelphia will see the in-game Stand Up To Cancer Moment live on Fox following the end of the fifth inning, a World Series (and All-Star Game) tradition since 2011.
Everyone on the field and in the stands will hold a placard with a “name or names written on it to support those who are currently fighting cancer or who have fought it in the past, or to honor the memory of those who succumbed to the disease.”
As part of MLB’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship, the league said it has “ensured that the 2022 World Series incorporates environmentally friendly features and activities.”
Efforts include World Series Green Teams during Games 1-7 collecting recyclables between innings and raising awareness for what people can do to be more environmentally conscious.
