June 8, 2023: In its on-going plot to steamroll over the landscape of global soccer, Wales-based Wrexham AFC, co-majority owned by actors and businessmen Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny, has signed a broad sponsorship deal with United Airlines, including the club’s official jersey-front sponsor.
Financial terms of the pact — which begins with the 2023-24 season for both the men’s side and women’s side during home and away games — were not disclosed.
Wrexham last month signed Betty Buzz as jersey training wear sponsor and official sparkling beverage, an organic move as the company was founded by actress and businesswoman Blake Lively, who is married to Reynolds.
VistaPrint last month became Wrexham’s new back-of-jersey sponsor, moving from their previous position as sleeve sponsor.
STōK Cold Brew Coffee, based in the U.S. (and not sold in the U.K.) this month was named the official sponsor of the club’s Racecourse Ground home stadium.
The club also has deals that include Tik Tok, Expedia and Aviation American Gin (founded by Reynolds).
McElhenney and Reynolds revealed the shirt and new sponsorship with United in a humorous promo spot in which they inadvertently told fans the team’s name had been to Wrexham United. “We accidentally left out the the super-important ampersand: It should have read Wrexham & United.”
“We seek out sponsors that match the spirit of both Wrexham Association Football Club and the people of Wrexham,” the co-chairmen said.
“We could think of no better sponsor for the next phase of our quest than United Airlines. The team, town and fans around the world are united as never before and United Airlines is committed to elevating our story and journey.”
Wrexham, which competes in League Two and was just promoted to the fourth tier of the English football league, was introduced to a national U.S. audience via the FX documentary series, Welcome to Wrexham.
Unitted Airlines said it would “partner with the team and their co-chairmen across social media and on their hit TV show as the incredible story of this team and its loyal fans continues to unfold.”
The club was in the U.S., having completed in the The Soccer Tournament $1 million winner-take-all event earlier this month.
Wrexham will next “travel across the Atlantic on United flights” for its scheduled friendlies against Chelseain Kenan Stadium, Chapel Hill, NC (July 19), LA Galaxy II in Dignity Health Sports Park, Carson, Calif. (July 22) and Man United in Snapdragon Stadium, San Diego (July 25).
“We seek out sponsors that match the spirit of both Wrexham Association Football Club and the people of Wrexham."
“The story of Wrexham AFC and their fans represents the best of what professional sports has to offer,” Josh Earnest, United Airlines chief communications officer, said via the carrier. “The passion and perseverance of this team on the rise has captured the imagination of people in the U.S. and around the world.
“When the Wrexham AFC players deliver even more heart-pumping moments this season, we couldn’t be prouder that United Airlines will be written across their chests.”
Formed in 1864, Wrexham ACF is the oldest club in Wales and the third oldest professional team in the world.
