‘Revenue Opportunity’: NCAA To Allow Branding On Playing Fields In-Season

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

June 6, 2024:
College playing fields now have their own version of Name Image Likeness.

The NCAA’s Playing Rules Oversight Panel today approved the use of corporate logos on fields for regular-season games in all divisions. The change becomes effective immediately.

Ads have been allowed during post-season and bowl games.

Under the new rule, the corporate advertisements can be placed in three spots on the field: A single advertisement centered on the 50-yard line is allowed in addition to no more than two smaller flanking advertisements elsewhere on the field.

This could be done on a game-by-game basis or for the whole season.

"This change allows schools to generate additional income to support student-athletes," NCAA president Charlie Baker said via the organization.

"I'm pleased that we could find flexibility within our rules to make this happen for member schools."

The move is optional among NCAA universities.

Although this is a major change for college football, the NBA allows corporate logos on its courts, virtual digital ads are seen on NHL dasherboards and MLB stadium walls are filed with ads surrounding the playing field.

The NCAA said one rationale for the rule change is to “align regular-season games in home stadiums with those already existing advertisement allowances for games played in the post-season bowl games and neutral-site games.

This decision also “provides an additional revenue opportunity for schools that has not been available during the regular season.”

"I think it's incumbent upon the conference to do more and provide more resources, and I'm focused on it," Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark told CBS Sports.

“We've spent a lot of time with the ADs, talking about how they can grow their own resources on campus."

The NCAA said the rule change is supported by Football Bowl Subdivision and Football Championship Subdivision conferences, as well as the Division I FBS Oversight and FCS Oversight Committees.
