Put A Ring On It: Yankees Most Valuable Team ($8.2B), Dodgers Second ($6.8B),

By Barry Janoff

March 26, 2025: The Los Angeles Dodgers may be wearing the ring as the defending World Series champions, but there is another title that belongs to their defeated opponents.

The New York Yankees have become the first team in MLB history to be valued at $8 billion, with estimated $8.2 billion valuation going into the 2025 season.

The Dodgers rank second with a $6.8 billion valuation, the only other MLB team topping $5 billion.

The Top Five include the only other MLB teams currently valued at $4 billion or more: the Boston Red Sox ($4.8 billion), Chicago Cubs ($4.6 billion) and San Francisco Giants ($4 billion), according to a just-released study from Forbes.

The average MLB franchise value is $2.6 billion this year, up 8% year-over-year.

MLB posted a record $12.1 billion in revenue in 2024, according to Forbes.

The Yankees have been the most valuable MLB franchise since these rankings were first published in 1998.

However, they are third among all sports franchises worldwide, behind the NFL Dallas Cowboys ($10.1 billion) and the NBA Golden State Warriors ($9 billion).

Over the last five years, NFL teams have appreciated 87% on average, to $5.7 billion, and NBA teams have risen 101%, to $4.4 billion. In the same period, MLB clubs are up 36%, according to Forbes.

The Dodgers value was up 25% Y-O-Y, traced to the arrival of NL MVP Shohei Ohtani and a drive to the World Series title.

The team with the biggest Y-O-Y change, though, was the Athletics, whose value of $1.8 billion was up 50%, founded in ownership’s decision to leave Oakland Coliseum.

The team is playing the next three-four seasons in Sacramento before a moved to Las Vegas in a new stadium, currently planned to open for the 2028 season.

The Chicago White Sox were the only MLB club that lost value in the last year — down 2%, from $2.05 billion to $2 billion — after a 2024 season in which they set a modern-era record with 121 losses.

The Miami Marlins were valued 30th among all MLB teams at $1.05 billion.
