Jackie Robinson Day ’25: Compelling, Powerful Impact Continues To Resonate

"A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives."

“There’s not an American in this country free until every one of us is free.“

By Barry Janoff

UPDATED April 16:
On Jackie Robinson Day, Rachel Robinson, 102, visited the Jackie Robinson Museum and watched as MLB representatives and fans participated in events. (Full story here.)

Items from Jackie Robinson Day across MLB are now up for auction.

April 14, 2025: With the season still ramping up and teams still finding their bearing, MLB players will unite on April 15 to celebrate and honor Jackie Robinson.

MLB retired Robinson’s No. 42 throughout the Majors in 1997 on the 50th anniversary of his breaking the color barrier, dedicated April 15 as Jackie Robinson Day annually in 2004, and since 2009 has requested that every player and all on-field personnel wear his No. 42 during games scheduled on Jackie Robinson Day.

Also honored will be Rachel Robinson (pictured below), born July 19, 1922, who has been a powerful force in enhancing her husband’s legacy while building her own, including launching the Jackie Robinson Foundation.

Tributes for Robinson, who passed away in 1972 due to a heart attack at age 53, will be prominent on the fields across MLB.

MLB players and coaching staff will continue the tradition of wearing Robinson's No. 42 during games, with each team using a Dodger blue ‘42’ regardless of the club’s normal colors.

Players, managers, coaches and umpires will also wear a ‘42’ patch on the side of their hats.

In addition, players will wear Nike "Breaking Barriers" T-shirts during batting practice.

Commemorative base jewels and lineup cards will be used in each game.

A pre-game Jackie Robinson tribute video produced by MLB Network will air in-stadium, as well as on MLB.com, MLB Network and MLB's social platforms.

Programming throughout the day on MLB Network and MLB The Show game includes modes that honor Robinson's legacy.

MLB.com and club sites will have editorial content and coverage highlighting each team's special connection with Robinson, as well as special features that “explore his impact as a baseball pioneer and his influence over today's players.”

MLB social media platforms in both English and Spanish will “demonstrate the many ways Jackie inspired baseball and society – not just as a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers, but most importantly, his character and what he represented before, during and after his career.”

Highlights include custom illustrations, collages, classic Jackie Robinson highlights and infographics.

New Era Jackie Robinson hats for all 32 teams have dropped on Fanatics. Each New Era hat features a No. 42 side patch with updated baseball diamond graphics. But what’s even more special is that Robinson’s signature is embroidered under the lid of each hat.

Some teams have Jackie Robinson Day special-edition Nike Home jerseys,

Royal blue socks and other Robinson-focused items are available for purchase at stadium retail locations.

Nike Baseball has again released Jackie Robinson-inspired footwear and gear.

For 2025, on-field shoes are the Nike Griffey 2 MCS cleat (pictured below): Ken Griffey Jr. was the first player to MLB the idea of wearing No. 42 on April 15.

The Baseball Hall Of Fame Shop includes hats, jerseys, T-shirts, photos, plaques and a variety of accessories.

The Los Angeles Dodgers will celebrate Jackie Robinson Day with a series of on-field and community events, including gathering at the Jackie Robinson statute in the centerfield plaza.

At the Dodger Stadium game that day, the first 40,000 fans get a Jackie Robinson replica jersey presented by UCLA Health.

Out of town on April 15, the New York Mets on April 17 will celebrate the history of former Black Mets players and "pay tribute to significant historical figures" during the Black Legacy Game presented by Nike against the St. Louis Cardinals. Players and fans will participate in activities provided by the Jackie Robinson Museum.

Since becoming the official bank and credit card partner of MLB in 2022, and establishing the Capital One Walk-Off program, Capital One has committed more than $1,000,000 to the Jackie Robinson Foundation in support of its programs.

Returning for the 2025 season, Capital One is supporting JRF and donating $1,000 for each “Capital One Walk-Off” (game-winning play) this year, committing to a total donation of $250,000 for the season.

“Capital One’s generosity helps us support the very talented JRF Scholars, the next generation of leaders,” Della Britton, president and CEO, said via the Jackie Robinson Foundation.

“We are thrilled to participate in another Capital One Walk Off season, aligning with a company that embraces leveling the playing field through education. Capital One also supports the educational efforts of the Jackie Robinson Museum, which serves to educate and inspire the public around the values Jackie Robinson represents.”

The Jackie Robinson Museum in New York will have free admission for special events in honor of Jackie Robinson’s historic debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947 (open from 11 AM  to 6 PM. ET, with special activities between Noon-3 PM ET).

The Jackie Robinson Celebration Game is scheduled for  April 15 in Holman Stadium within the historic Jackie Robinson Training Complex, Vero Beach, Fla.

The game between the Clearwater Threshers and the Palm Beach Cardinals is a partnership among the United Way of Indian River County, MLB and the Jackie Robinson Training Complex.

It “honors Robinson’s monumental impact on sports and society. It also serves as a crucial fundraiser for vital programs and services within Indian River County.”

Robinson himself played in the first official Spring Training game in the stadium on March 31, 1948.

Robinson’s impact continues to build beyond the ballpark.

This past January, the Big Ten Conference, in honor of Jackie Robinson’s “core values of courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, citizenship, justice, commitment, and excellence,” unveiled the Big Ten Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award.

It will recognize the Conference’s student-athletes “who have made an exceptional impact in their local community.”

Before breaking MLB’s color barrier, Jackie Robinson was a standout student-athlete at UCLA, where he was the school’s first four-sport letter winner, excelling in football, basketball, track and field and baseball.

Also in January, New York Waterway christened the newest addition to its fleet, Jackie Robinson, designed to carry up to 500 passengers.

“When a group of us was discussing a name for our newest vessel, we kept landing on the idea of honoring Jackie Robinson, a figure who is an inspiration to all of us, and a true American icon,” president and CEO Armand Pohan said at the time via NY Waterway.
