Aly Raisman, Rachel Platten, Yara Shahidi Star In Aerie Body-Positive Campaign

By Barry Janoff

January 25, 2018: Aly Raisman has been in the public eye and has received great acclaim for her strong stance as one of the leaders fighting for the rights of women, and, on a more personal level, helping to uncover the injustices done to her and numerous other young women when she was a gold medal Olympic winner as part of USA Gymnastics.

Raisman is now helping to redefine the landscape of marketing, signing a deal with Aerie, a lifestyle brand division of American Eagle Outfitters.

She will appear in multi-media marketing alongside other just-signed Aerie “Role Models,” including actress Yara Shahidi (Black-ish, Grown-ish) and multi-platinum and award winning singer-songwriter Rachel Platten.

The trio will appear with Iskra Lawrence, the first Aerie Role Model, in an “Aerie Real” campaign planned to break this spring.

Marketing will be driven by the theme, “No retouching. Body positivity. Girl power.”

“Yara, Aly, Rachel, and Iskra truly embody AerieREAL and what it means to be strong, confident, and happy in your own skin,” Jennifer Foyle, Aerie Global Brand President, said in a statement.

“At Aerie, we believe in authentic, real beauty and never airbrush our models. Now, more than ever, we want to encourage women everywhere to feel empowered to embrace their own unique qualities and beautiful REAL selves.”

According to Aerie, the women were selected “for their influential voices, unique stories and self-made success.”

The focus will be on Aerie's intimates, apparel, activewear and swimwear.

An intro spot sees the four women at a photo shot talking about the brand, marketing and their goals.

“Retouching (of photos)? Never, We are all perfectly imperfect. Body positivity. Always, and forever. Let’s get real. Be real. Focus on how you feel. Forget what other people say. You are enough, exactly how you are. All we need do is celebrate us.”

Raisman then says, “Because we need each other now. More than ever.”

Raisman, Platten, Shahidi and Lawrence are each featured in their own stand-alone spots.

In addition to print, Internet and social media, the Role Models will support the “Aerie mission of body positivity and women empowerment through Real Talk speaking engagements taking place in Aerie stores.“

They also will design exclusive products, with 100% of sales benefiting a charity of their choice.

“We’ve all been through something that, in the end, will make you a stronger person.” – Aly Raisman

As for the powerful message that the Role Models want to send:

• “I love supporting causes and movements that help perpetuate this idea of people rising together.” – Yara Shahidi

 • “In being more vulnerable and having the courage to share my truths even more, I’ve learned that more people feel like that gives them permission to do the same.” – Rachel Platten

• “I couldn’t be more excited for the #AerieREAL Role Model community to grow because we need voices. We need diversity. I want every girl to feel like she has someone to look up to.” – Iskra Lawrence

• “We’ve all been through something that, in the end, will make you a stronger person.” – Aly Raisman
