Detroit Lions, CJ Stroud, Mahomes Lead NFL Top-Selling Player Merchandise

September 18, 2024: Based on player popularity among consumers, the Detroit Lions are the early favorites to have the most success this NFL season.
The Lions have three players in the Top Ten and a league-leading six among the Top 50 players with the highest sales of official NFL-licensed merchandise between March 1-May 31, 2024, according to just-released figures from the NFL Players Assn.
The first list of the season tracks sales of officially licensed NFL player merchandise and includes data from online and traditional retail outlets as reported by more than 80 NFLPA licensees.
“It is the only verified ranking of all officially licensed NFL player products,” according to the NFLPA.
Categories include adult and youth game jerseys, T-shirts, hoodies, bobbleheads, plush toys, socks, face coverings, headbands, figurines, wall decals, backpacks, pennants, photos, drinkware and pet products.
Sales figures were not disclosed. The NFL generates more than $4 billion annually in retail sales, according to industry analysts.
Although Lions’ players Aidan Hutchinson, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jahmyr Gibbs were in the Top Ten, the overall leader of the pack is Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud.
Stroud, who was among the sales leaders in a variety of categories, was No. 1 in jersey sales during the period — as reported by Fanatics, Nike, Under Armour, Dallas Cowboys Merchandising and Outerstuff — followed by Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Hutchinson and Amon-Ra St. Brown.
Mahomes was No. 2 overall among the Top 50, with a No. 1 showing in such categories as Fathead decals and cutouts, Highland Mint framed memorabilia, hardline sales and bobbleheads from Forever Collectibles, Iconic Puzzles, Trends International posters, custom sandals from ISlide; and socks from BF, Rock ‘Em and Strideline.
Behind Detroit, teams with the most players among the Top 50 in merchandise sales were the Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers and New York Jets, with four players each.
At No. 11 on the list, Harrison Butker of the Chiefs makes his first appearance in the NFLPA Top 50. He outsold all of his teammates except for Mahomes and became only the second placekicker all-time to make the list, following Evan McPherson at the start of the 2022 season, according to the NFLPA.
Detroit’s Hutchinson became the first defensive player among the Top 3 since Khalil Mack at the start of the 2019 season, moving up 15 spots from No. 18 in last season’s year-end NFLPA list (March 2023-February 2024).
Saquon Barkley places at No. 7 in his first season with the Eagles after not being among the Top 50 when he was with the New York Giants in last season’s year-end NFLPA list.
Among the other biggest risers in sales from last season’s year-end NFLPA list: St. Brown moved up 29 spots to No. 4; Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner of the Jets climbed from No. 36 to No. 17; and Russell Wilson, a five-time leader on the NFLPA Players Sales List, jumped 24 spots to No. 18 folowing his move from the Denver Broncos to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Among the categories included in the NFLPA list:
• Fathead’s hottest-selling wall decals and cutouts featured Mahomes, Justin Jefferson, Josh Allen, T.J. Watt and Tyreek Hill.
• The Top 5 players in hardline sales and bobbleheads from Forever Collectibles (FOCO) included Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, DaVonta Smith and Aaron Rodgers.
• Iconic Puzzles sales were driven by Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Josh Allen and Dak Prescott.
• BreakingT, known for real-time, moment-driven T-shirts, saw significant sales from Saquon Barkley, Josh Allen and J.J. McCarthy.
• Highland Mint reported its best-selling framed memorabilia featured Mahomes, CeeDee Lamb, Burrow and Josh Allen.
• Lids reported its top cap sellers as Justin Jefferson, Aidan Hutchinson, and Tua Tagovailoa.
• Custom sandals from ISlide saw high demand for Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, Justin Jefferson, Sauce Gardner and Burrow.
• Figurines and coins from MBI Inc. were top sellers for Burrow, Jalen Hurts, Josh Allen, Tagovailoa and Mahomes.
• FBF, Rock ‘Em, and Strideline’s top-selling socks included Mahomes, Justin Jefferson, Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill.
• Funko reported strong sales of Pop vinyl collectibles, led by Tagovailoa, Mahomes, Joe Burrow, George Kittle and Josh Allen.
• Outerstuff’s top youth apparel featured Jalen Hurts, Sauce Gardner, Garrett Wilson, Aaron Rodgers and Mahomes.
• Trends International’s top-selling player posters showcased Mahomes, Micah Parsons, Travis Kelce, Burrow and T.J. Watt.
• Party Animal’s collectible figurines and squishy toys saw high demand for T.J. Watt, Patrick Mahomes, Dak Prescott, Josh Allen, and Travis Kelce.
