Turducken: NFL John Madden Thanksgiving Returns With Multi-Platform Activation

By Barry Janoff
November 21, 2024: Following the advice of John Madden — who famously said “There’s no place that I would rather be today on Thanksgiving than right here, right now, at a football game” — the NFL has planned a day of activation for the third annual John Madden Thanksgiving Celebration on Nov. 28.
The NFL said John Madden Thanksgiving Celebration, which began in 2022 “as a way to honor the late icon’s indelible legacy, brings together all the things that were important to him — family, football, food, tradition and fun.”
The NFL said Madden called some 20 games on Thanksgiving, during which Turducken became a vital part of the festivities.
Network partners Fox, CBS and NBC again celebrate the contributions Madden, who passed away in December 2021, brought to the game, both on the field and in the broadcast booth, with tributes interspersed throughout each game on Thanksgiving Day.
The schedule includes the Chicago Bears at Detroit Lions (CBS, 12:30 PM ET), New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys (Fox, 4:30 PM ET) and Miami Dolphins at Green Bay Packers (NBC, 8 PM ET).
New this year, the NFL will benefit the recently-created John Madden Foundation by auctioning off game-used items from the three Thanksgiving Day games via NFL Auction, with proceeds supporting the new foundation.
The Madden Foundation’s mission is to help “the young people of Oakland (CA) and other similar East Bay communities receive educational and other opportunities. John’s wife, Virginia, is committed to see that this dream is fulfilled in his memory.”
Each network will select a Madden Thanksgiving MVP, who will receive a $10,000 donation from the NFL Foundation to be given to a high school or youth football program in their name, as the topic of youth football was important to Madden.
This year for the first time, each Madden Thanksgiving MVP will be awarded with a Madden Thanksgiving MVP trophy, created to honor Madden and “celebrate everything the game of football means to the Thanksgiving holiday.”
The trophy is in the form of a pylon and includes various “Maddenisms” written throughout, along with visual cues that address the holiday theme.NFL Media will support all elements of the John Madden Thanksgiving Celebration across programming and platforms leading up to and on Thanksgiving Day, including Good Morning Football on NFL Network.
A special NFL-produced Madden Hallmark spot will begin each broadcast, “conveying what Thanksgiving meant to him in his own words.”
A coin featuring a silhouette of Coach Madden on one side (“Heads”) and a six-legged Turducken on the reverse side (“Tails) will be used for the coin toss, and a patch featuring a silhouette of Coach Madden will be included on the jersey of each player at all three games.
Special John Madden Thanksgiving Celebration stencils will be placed on the sidelines of Ford Field (Detroit), AT&T Stadium (Dallas) and Lambeau Field (Green Bay), along with stadium wall panels that include an iconic image of Madden from his coaching days.
The NFL’s radio broadcast partners Westwood One and SiriusXM NFL Radio will air Madden and Thanksgiving-related programming leading up to and on Thanksgiving Day.
The NFL’s social media handles across X, Snapchat, TikTok, Reddit, YouTube and others will support John Madden Thanksgiving Celebration by posting content around the Thanksgiving celebration, and AP Images will be capturing game day still imagery throughout the day.
Amazon Prime Video has released the trailer for “It’s in the Game: Madden NFL,” a four-part docuseries focusing on the origins and growth of the EA Sports NFL Madden video game series. It will premiere on Nov. 26.
“What started as an unlikely pairing between a computer whiz and a football legend, ignited a revolution and triggered a seismic collision between the worlds of jocks and geeks. They should have failed. Instead, their game changed the game — and our culture, too.”Shaboozey will take the stage as part of the Lions Thanksgiving Halftime Show powered by Verizon.
Lainey Wilson, Grammy, ACM, and CMA Award winner and reigning ACM and CMA Entertainer of the Year, will perform live at AT&T Stadium for The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Kickoff Halftime Show during the Cowboys Thanksgiving Day game.
The Packers will host violinist Lindsey Stirling in Lambeau Field for a special Thanksgiving night performance at halftime of their game.
