American Gaming Assn.: People In U.S. Will Legally Wager $1.39B On Super Bowl

By Barry Janoff

February 4, 2025: Stating that “No single event unites sports fans like the Super Bowl, and that excitement extends to sports betting,” the American Gaming Assn. estimates that people in the U.S. will legally wager a record $1.39 billion on Super Bowl LIX between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles, “highlighting the continued expansion and enthusiasm around the legal sports betting market.”

While substantial, the $1.39 billion figure is overshadowed by estimates from previous years, when the American Gaming Assn. also included in its total estimate a plethora of options other than “legal” available to Super Bowl wagerers, with such unregulated options as bookmakers and wagers among friends, family and co-workers.

Last year, for Super Bowl LVIII, the American Gaming Assn. estimated that 68 million adults in the U.S. would wager $23.1 billion across legal and non-regulated options.

“The Super Bowl LIX estimate includes legal wagers only in U.S. legal jurisdictions,” according to the American Gaming Assn.

“Previously, the AGA, using a public survey instrument, arrived at estimates that incorporated all forms of betting on the Super Bowl, including bets made on unregulated or illegal platforms, as well as casual bets.”

Entering Super Bowl LIX, 38 states — including Louisiana, site of the game in New Orleans’ Caesars SuperDome — and Washington DC offer legal gaming options, Missouri is legal, but not yet operational, according to the American Gaming Assn.

"This ($1.39 billion) figure underscores the positive impact of the legal market — from protecting consumers to generating tax revenue that benefits communities across the country — while enhancing the game experience for all,” Bill Miller, AGA president and CEO, said via the organization.

"No single event unites sports fans like the Super Bowl, and that excitement extends to sports betting, with this year's record legal handle reflecting its widespread appeal.”

According to the American Gaming Assn., “With Super Bowl LIX marking another major milestone in the growth of the legal U.S. sports betting market, the AGA is committed to fostering a thriving legal market that promotes responsible gaming, safeguards consumers, and supports long-term economic growth.”

As part of this effort, the American Gaming Assn. said it is partnering with Mark Ingram II, former New Orleans Saints All-Pro running back and current football analyst and responsible gaming ambassador.

At Super Bowl LIX. Ingram will appear on Radio Row and elsewhere on behalf of  American Gaming Assn.'s “Have A Game Plan. Bet Responsibly” campaign, encouraging those who plan to wager on the game to bet legally and responsibly.

The American Gaming Assn. said its efforts to support and promote legal wagering — and also discourage people from wagering beyond their means — is having an impact.

According to the American Gaming Assn.'s 2024 American Attitudes Survey, “75% of Americans support legal sports wagering in their home state, 90% view sports betting as an acceptable form of entertainment, 66% of Americans believe the gaming industry’s responsible gaming programs are effective.”

“These latest survey results highlight a consistent trend over the years: as gaming expands to new audiences,” Joe Maloney, American Gaming Assn. svp-strategic communication, said via the group.

“Americans increasingly see the benefits of a legal, regulated gaming marketplace that contributes to communities, prioritizes responsibility and provides unmatched entertainment,.”

Based on its most recent numbers, the American Gaming Assn. said legal gaming has a $329 billion impact on the annual national economy and generates $53 billion annually in tax revenue.
