‘Console-ation Prize’: WNBA Signs Multi-Platform Pact With Sony PlayStation

By Barry Janoff

May 19, 2023: The 2023 WNBA season is starting, but the league has not stopped signing new deals.

The WNBA today unveiled a multi-year partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment naming PlayStation the official console and a marketing partner of the WNBA.

As part of the partnership, Sony Interactive Entertainment said PlayStation would “explore various marketing opportunities with the WNBA, starting with the AT&T WNBA All-Star Game in Las Vegas (July 15).

Financial terms of the pact were not revealed.

“At PlayStation, we believe ‘play has no limits,’ and few cultural spaces have better defined that spirit than women’s sports and especially the WNBA,” Andrea Perez, Sony Interactive Entertainment svp-brand, product and services marketing, said via the company.

“We are thrilled to partner with the WNBA to continue investing in the next generation of women athletes and will be exploring new and unique ways to elevate and share their stories.”

The PlayStation alliance follows several other key moves the WNBA has made entering its 27th season — Tip-Off My 19-21 — including CarMax becoming a NBA Changemaker, unveiling its ‘More Than Just A Game’ marketing campaign, re-envisions app and Web site,  rule changes and a new media deal With Scripps ION TV.

“The WNBA is thrilled to partner with PlayStation to engage our dynamic fanbase through new and immersive ways,” Phil Cook, WNBA CMO, said via the league.

Many WNBA fans are passionate gamers and we look forward to PlayStation establishing a new level for our tech savvy fans to experience our game.”

Via its PlayStation Playmakers program, Sony Interactive Entertainment recently signed such WNBA players Arike Ogunbowale, NaLyssa Smith and Zia Cooke to its roster “to highlight their passion for gaming.”

According to the company, “Featuring athletes, creators, actors, artists, gamers and entertainers from around the world, PlayStation Playmakers is a vibrant community of talent working collaboratively with PlayStation to provide fans with early looks and behind-the-scenes access.”
