All-Stars Acuña Jr., Ohtani Also Take MLB Lead In ’23 First Half Jersey Sales

July 10, 2023: Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. and Los Angeles Angels DH and pitcher Shohei Ohtani are not only leaders on the field and in All-Star votes, they also are atop the list when it comes to sales of MLB jerseys.
Acuña and Ohtani, who topped the NL and AL, respectively in votes for the 2023 All-Star Game presented by MasterCard, are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 with the most popular MLB player jerseys over the first half of the 2023 season.
The list, released jointly today by Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Assn., tallied sales from MLBShop.com of Nike player jerseys this season from Opening Day.
MLB did not release sales figures.
According to MLB, this is the first time an Atlanta Braves player has MLB’s most popular jersey since the list was first issued ranking jerseys from the 2010 season.
The Braves lead MLB with four players appearing in the Top 20, also including Matt Olson (No. 8), Austin Riley (No. 11) and Ozzie Albies (No. 12).
The defending World Champion Houston Astros have three players on the list: Jose Altuve (No. 5), Alex Bregman (No. 9) and Yordan Alvarez (No. 17).
The Los Angeles Dodgers also have three players on the list: Mookie Betts (No. 6), Freddie Freeman (No. 16) and Clayton Kershaw (No. 20).
Fourteen of the Top 20 players with the most popular jerseys were selected for the 2023 All-Star Game in Seattle (although the roster has since changed due to injuries).
Seattle Mariners centerfielder and MLB All-Star Ambassador Julio Rodríguez ranks No. 7 in jersey sales, his first time appearing in the Top Ten.
MLB said this year’s top-selling player jerseys list represents the diversity of its most popular players.
According to the league, five of the Top Ten and nine of the Top 20 players on the most popular list are either Black/African-American or Latino.
Eight players were born outside of the United States, with two from the Dominican Republic and Venezuela, and one from Japan, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Curaçao.
