Brady, Mahomes (Again) Lead NFL Year-End Top 50 Player Merchandise Sales

May 5, 2022: Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes II have been battling for football supremacy on the field for years, so it is only logical they would also battle for supremacy off the field.
For a record fifth time and second year in a row, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Brady tops the list of year-end sales of NFL player merchandise.
He is followed by Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Mahomes, according to just-released figures from the NFL Players Assn.
Brady and Mahomes atop the list is not unusual: One or the other have led the quarterly or year-end NFLPA list 12 consecutive times since October 2018.
The list reports sales of all officially licensed NFL player products from March 1, 2021 through Feb. 28, 2022, “serving as the most up-to-date, comprehensive sales figures currently available,” according to the NFLPA.
Specific sales figures were not released, but the NFLPA said official licensees “generated record retail sales this past season (in excess of) $2.17 billion, the eighth consecutive year of increases.”
And having quarterbacks lead the list is also not uncommon.
This year, ten of the top 11 players are quarterbacks, the lone exception being George Kittle, tight end for the San Francisco 49ers, at No. 7.
Kittle finished as the highest ranked tight end on any NFLPA year-end list, according to the NFLPA.
Super Bowl LVI champions Los Angeles Rams had two players among the Top 20: No 14. DT Aaron Donald and No. 20 QB Matthew Stafford.
Six players saw major leaps in sales from pre-season to year-end rankings, according to the NFLPA.
T.J. Watt jumped 24 spots (No. 36 to No. 12) and Donald 23 spots (from No. 37). Nick Chubb rose 16 spots to No. 15, while both Kyler Murray and Derrick Henry went up 14 spots, to No. 24 and No. 21, respectively.
Looking to the future, the NFLPA said a record nine rookies were among the Top 50 year-end list.
They included No. 5 Mac Jones (New England Patriots), No. 8 Justin Fields (Chicago Bears), Ja’Marr Chase, Najee Harris, Micah Parsons, Trevor Lawrence, DeVonta Smith, Trey Lance and Zach Wilson.
Jonathan Taylor and Deebo Samuel made their debut on any Top 50 sales list at No. 40 and No. 43, respectively.
The five most popular jerseys reported by cumulative sales from Fanatics, Outerstuff and Dallas Cowboys Merchandising were Brady, Burrow, Josh Allen (Buffalo Bills), Kittle and Mahomes.
Lids’ most in-demand player signatures were Brady, Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay Packers) Russell Wilson (Seattle Seahawks, now with the Denver Broncos) and DK Metcalf (Seahawks).
Brady and Mahomes were also among the Top 5 best-sellers in categories including player figurines and squishy toys from Party Animals, Funko Pop vinyl collectibles, FOCO bobbleheads, reloadable credit cards from CARD.com, Fathead wall decals and cutouts; and rugs, pool cues and game chairs from new licensee Imperial International.
Sales of collegiate co-branded drinkware from GameTime Sidekicks were lead by Brady (Michigan), Mahomes (Texas Tech), Nick Chubb (Georgia), Mac Jones (Alabama) and Tua Tagovailoa (Alabama).
The NFLPA said its list, which was introduced in 2014, represents “the only verified rankings of all officially licensed NFL player products sold from online and traditional retail outlets as reported by more than 80 NFLPA licensees."
Licensed product across hardline, apparel, digital and unconventional categories include adult and youth game jerseys, T-shirts, hoodies, bobbleheads, plush toys, socks, face coverings, headbands, figurines, wall decals, backpacks, pennants, photos, drinkware and pet products.
