By Barry Janoff
August 31, 2023: For the 13th season of its Nissan Heisman House − aka the “House built for Heisman Trophy” winners − Nissan is going big and getting real, enlisting 2022 Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams, airing eight spots throughout the college football season, joining with Zillow, adding a sweepstakes and a virtual tour and taking the Nissan Heisman House Tour to campuses across the country.
The multi-media effort supports Nissan vehicles including Rogue, Sentra, the 2024 Nissan Z NISMO and the all-electric Nissan Ariya SUV.
Williams joins a roster of past Heisman Trophy winners including Bryce Young, Eddie George, Robert Griffin III, Matt Leinart, Baker Mayfield, George Rogers, Barry Sanders, Billy Sims, Tim Tebow and Charles Woodson.
“There’s no better way to open the new college football season than inviting fans to join us at the Nissan Heisman House,” Marisstella Marinkovic, Nissan U.S. vp and CMO, said via the company.
“In addition to all the hijinks with the Heisman winners, we’re expanding the Heisman House excitement with digital collaborations to bring fans closer to the action.”
Nissan Heisman House spots will air on on ESPN, ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC; as well as digital and social media.
Through Nissan’s collaboration with Zillow, people can “explore the Heisman House like a Heisman trophy resident” via a tour, photos, and inside information and details.
Beginning Sept. 8, people can “take a virtual tour, interact with athletes from the campaign, and put their college football knowledge to the test to compete for unique Heisman prizes.Nissan has also joined with Caleb Simpson — who takes tours of real people’s homes and apartments and posts them on TikTok and Instagram – to take viewers on a visit around the House with help from the Heisman winners and mascots.
The 2023 Nissan Heisman House Tour will travel to campuses nationwide to coincide with college football games. The Tour gives people the “chance to explore the House, strike a pose with the Heisman Trophy, meet college football legends and experience game day like a Heisman winner.” (Details here.)
This year’s Nissan Heisman House campaign
• Is It Real?
Caleb Willams says he used to watch the Hesiman House on TV and wondered if it was real. Now that he’s part of it he says, “It’s a lot like being on campus.”
While “Louie Louie” plays in the background, he gets a rookie tour and sees Heisman Trophy winners in the kitchen, gym, garden, laundry room, driving Nissan vehicles and even filming a video for “Ticky-Tok.”
• Covering The Spread
Robert Griffin III and Matt Leinart relax in the shade and commentate like sportscasters while Bryce Young does landscaping, toiling in the hot sun. “The way Bryce covers the whole field is incredible — he’s really spreading it around!” they snicker as Young shovels mulch.
• Too Helpful
Tim Tebow is overzealous in his desire to help the others with chores but always shows up when they don’t need help, which is why they don’t ask for his help. “Sometimes people need help asking for help,’ Tebow explains to himself.
• Bath Day
Bryce Young discovers why Barry Sanders takes his laundry to a laundromat instead of doing it in the House laundry room — the Heisman House washing machines are being hoarded by team mascots.• Endorsing
Caleb Williams finds the Heisman House has turned into endorsement central, with the others speaking into an imaginary camera and doing faux commercials for every product they touch. Bryce Young shows a reluctant Williams how to become a Heisman House spokesperson.
• Florida Man
A newspaper headline reads: "Florida Man Seen Wrestling With Two Gators." Billy Sims wonders if "these Florida man stories are real." Cut to UFlorida alumni Tim Tebow wrestling with two UFlorida gator mascots.
• Missing Out
Charles Woodson wonders if he is missing something because his Michigan Wolverines are one of the few college football teams without a mascot and the others in the House are bonding with their school mascots.
He brings into the House a real wolverine — “The wolverine has a reputation for ferocity and strength out of proportion to its size, with the documented ability to kill prey many times larger than itself' — which unfortunately attacks Eddie George. “And that’s when I learned why the Michigan Wolverines don’t have a mascot," says George.
Text reads: "No wolverines were harmed in the making of this commercial. Eddie George on the other hand . . . .”
• No Hands
Bryce Young tosses a football to Big Al, the elephant mascot for his UAlabama, which catches the ball with its trunk. “No hands,’ said Young. Baker Mayfield, driving a Nissan Ariya SUV, engages the self-parking mode. “No hands,” says Mayfield.
