July 11, 2023: Following a decision by Electronic Arts in May 2022 to end its three-decade alliance with FIFA, EA said it would begin publishing games under a new EA Sports Football Club brand in 2023.
This past April, EA provided a preview of what it called “the interactive future of football,” with EA Sports FC revealing its brand vision, identity and logo.
A full rollout, including opening the EA Sports Football Club for full video game player access, is happening this month, complete with an anchor intro spot and multi-media marketing support.
To coincide with that, EA Sports today unveiled a multi-year global partnership with PepsiCo making three of its flagship brands — Pepsi, Gatorade, and Lay's — “proud new partners of EA Sports FC.”
Financial terms of the pact were not revealed.
EA Sports and FIFA had been aligned since 1993 but were unable to agree on a new licensing deal.
According to The New York Times, EA Sports-FIFA games “generated more than $20 billion in sales.”
"For years, PepsiCo's brands have been delivering memorable moments for football fans, and we're energized to incorporate that rich heritage into our own experiences as we set forth on this remarkable journey with EA Sports FC,” David Jackson, vp-brand at EA Sports FC, said via the videogamer.
“We're proud to partner with PepsiCo to create more unmissable experiences that will undoubtedly captivate fans of the World's Game."
The strategic agreement will see both parties” collaborate to deliver gaming experiences that create moments of joy for modern football fans,.”PepsiCo said the alliance allows it “to further develop its rich heritage within the football entertainment space, forming part of its overarching business strategy to deliver engaging fan experiences and activities that unite the realms of football, music, and gaming.”
"EA Sports is an iconic brand in the realm of football and has revolutionized fan engagement,” Adam Warner, PepsiCo head of global sports and partnerships, said via the company.
“With PepsiCo's history and extensive involvement in football and entertainment, our brands are uniquely positioned to push the boundaries of football fandom. This partnership enables us to reach football fans and communities worldwide, and to provide them with experiences that elevate their connection to the beautiful game."
PepsiCo said global ambassadors from its football roster of spokespersons — including Vini Jr (Brazil and Real Madrid) and Leah Williamson (England and Arsenal) — would be featured in upcoming activations, such as “entertainment crossovers, in-game integrations, and on-pack promotions that will grant fans access to exclusive experiences and must-have in-game rewards.”
The partnership will also “provide a platform to further collaborate on existing PepsiCo initiatives, encouraging participation in football and gender equality in the sport.”
EA said that FC would become “EA Sports’ platform to create, innovate and grow new football experiences, connecting hundreds of millions of fans through console, mobile, online and eSports products.”
The EA Sports FC brand plans to debut in more than 100 matches across leagues worldwide through EA Sports partners including the Premier League, LaLiga, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1, WSL, NWSL and CONMEBOL.“This is where the story of EA Sports FC begins,” Nick Wlodyka, EA Sports FC svp/GM, said via the brand.
“We’re building on 30 years of leadership and history creating experiences that bring the global football community together, and continuing to take it into a fan-first future.
EA Sports FC is planning a special livestream event on July 13 to feature a keynote from executive spokespeople and special guests, details on the upcoming EA Sports FC 24 title, and a reveal of the global cover athlete (9:30 PDT / 12:30 PM EDT / 5:30 PM BST / 6:30 PM CEST).
A recording of the livestream will be available after the event on EA's YouTube channel.
