WWE's WrestleMania 32, Led By 101K Fans And Shaq, Sets Financial, Media Records

By Barry Janoff

April 5, 2016: It must be the Snickers. Or the Texas BBQ. Or Shaquille O'Neal.

Despite technical difficulties that prevented a good chunk of fans from getting into the event for hours, WWE said that WrestleMania 32 on April 3 set a new attendance record of 101,763 "as fans from all 50 states and 35 countries" were on hand on Sunday evening in AT&T Stadium, home of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys.

The previous WWE attendance record was at WrestleMania 3 in 1987, when 93,173 fans watch the festivities in the Pontiac Silverdome in Detroit.

WrestleMania 32 also became the highest-grossing live event in WWE history, at $17.3 million.

The previous record was WrestleMania 31 last year in Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., home for the San Francisco 49ers, where gross revenue was $12.6 million, according to WWE.

In addtion, WWE released figures that showed its digital subscription service, WWE Network, hit a record 1.82 million total subscribers following WrestleMania 32, making it the most viewed WrestleMania in history.

That represents a 39% increase from March 30, 2015, the day after WrestleMania 31.

“History was made last night with both a record-setting crowd at AT&T Stadium and more households than ever before watching WrestleMania on WWE Network,” Vince McMahon, WWE Chairman and CEO, said during a conference call on Monday (April 4). “WWE Network continues to drive transformative growth for our company.”

AT&T Stadium, which opened in 2009, has a capacity of 105,000, which can be exceeded with standing room tickets.

The venue's all-time mark is 108,713, set at the 2010 NBA All-Star Game, followed by the 105,121 who saw the Cowboys host the New York Giants in September 2009.

In February 2010, the stadium hosted Super Bowl XLV, when 103,219 watched the Green Bay Packers defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“We are thrilled that we made history tonight at WrestleMania, further cementing its place as one of the top sports and entertainment events in the world,” WWE chief brand officer Stephanie McMahon said in a statement. “We thank our fans, the Dallas Cowboys and the entire Jones family for their overwhelming support.”

Snickers, which recently signed on as presenting sponsor for WrestleMania 32, supported the event with multi-media marketing and on-site activation.

O'Neal was in-state to attend Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame media conference (April 4) in Houston, attached to the NCAA Final Four championship game, in which it was revealed that he would be part of the Class of 2016. He made the short detour to Dallas for Wrestlemania 32 to be part of the 3rd annual Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royale (see WWE coverage here).

“History was made last night with both a record-setting crowd at AT&T Stadium and more households than ever before watching WrestleMania on WWE Network."

Among other figures rolled out by WWE regarding WrestleMania 32:

• Video views reached 65 million across social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Vine and YouTube), representing an 87% increase over last year.

• WrestleMania garnered a record 10.9 million social media fan engagements, up 19% from the prior year.

“Results today further demonstrate the power of our brand, illustrate our potential to drive long-term growth and provide evidence that we are effectively executing our multi-platform content strategy,” George Barrios, WWE chief strategy & financial officer, said during the conference call.

WrestleMania 33  is scheduled for  April 2, 2017 in the Orlando Citrus Bowl.
