World Surf League Brings Ex-NBA, WTA, adidas Exec On Board As New CEO

By Barry Janoff

July 20, 2017: Calling it the "most important time in our history," the World Surf League has named veteran sports executive Sophie Goldschmidt its new CEO.

Goldschmidt will officially take over from interim CEO Dirk Ziff in August, with both the men’s and women’s championship tours in progress.

Goldschmidt joins WSL from London-based CSM Sport and Entertainment, where she served as group managing director.

Her resume also includes svp and managing director for the NBA, vp for the WTA, tennis and women's soccer sports U.S. marketing manager for adidas and chief commercial officer and CMO for the Rugby Football Union.

Goldschmidt joins WSL as it is undergoing worldwide growth and a tech enhancement as the sport looks forward to the inclusion of surfing in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

"Sophie is exactly what the league needs," said Ziff, who will remain a member of the WSL board of directors. "Her experience, strong leadership and winning and inclusive management style will further elevate the League and grow engagement among fans around the world."

World Surf League, based in Santa Monica, Calif., has more than 1.6 million followers on Twitter, 6.2 million-plus followers on Facebook and 2.4 million followers on Instagram.

According to Andrew Wilson, chairman of the WSL board and CEO for Electronic Arts, "Sophie is a great choice for the WSL. She is not only an outstanding leader, she is the perfect cultural fit and will bring both expertise and originality to this rapidly changing sport as it grows in wider appeal across the globe."

WSL said that in her role as CEO, Goldschmidt would focus on "leveraging the once-in-a-generation opportunity to evolve the landscape of competitive surfing around the world with the Kelly Slater Wave Co. and its groundbreaking technology.

"(She) has also outlined commitment to athletes and fan experience and further globalization as key pillars for the WSL going forward. She intends to advance various athlete development programs to build authentic interest in the sport in addition to tailoring fan experiences to be as immersive as possible through new formats, live content and other media."

"Having worked with her firsthand, I know she will be a great leader for the WSL and will bring unmatched innovation, passion, and vision to the role," NBA commissioner Adam Silver said  in a statement.
