June 2, 2013: No. 1 overall draft pick Brittney Griner may be getting most of the national media attention for her WNBA basketball attributes and ability to dunk, but fellow rookie Elena Delle Donne is getting the wins and the marketing deals.
Delle Donne, drafted No. 2 overall by the WNBA's Chicago Sky, scored 22 points in her official debut to lead the Sky to a 102-80 victory over Griner's Phoenix Mercury last week. She then unveiled deals with Nike, DuPont and vitamin and health-care company Genesis Today. Financial terms of the deals were not disclosed.
By Sunday, the Sky were 3-0 and Delle Donne was averaging 19 points a game.
Griner (who also has a deal with Nike), Delle Donne and No. 3 overall draft pick Skylar Diggins (Tulsa Shock) have been the focal point of WNBA ticket sales efforts and league-wide marketing.
