Warriors Take NBA Sales Crown With Four Players Among Most-Popular Jerseys
By Barry Janoff
June 29, 2017: Stephen Curry and the 2017 champion Golden State Warriors are atop the NBA and atop the sales charts, with the NBA’s most popular jersey and team merchandise lists, respectively, based on just-released overall sales from NBAStore.com, covering April-June, 2017.
LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers was No. 2 in jersey sales and the Warriors’ Kevin Durant No. 3, the same order as the previous list, which covered July 2016-March 2017.
The Curry-James 1-2 punch dates back farther, to the sales period covering April-June 2016.
NBA MVP Russell Westbrook of the Oklahoma City Thunder moved up to No. 4 from the previous list’s No. 5, swapping places with the Cavs Kyrie Irving who went from No. 4 to No. 5.
The jersey list could see a shake-up when Nike takes over from adidas as the NBA's official on-court apparel provider and presents a new look for the league's players.
The jerseys for 2017-18 will also mark the first time teams have been able to sell ad space to marketers, although these will be sold locally by respective teams and not nationally via the NBA Store.
The Warriors and Cavaliers were 1-2 in merchandise sales in the new list, the same as the previous list.
However, the Chicago Bulls moved up from No. 4 to No. 3, the Boston Celtics moved up from No. 8 to No. 4 and the San Antonio Spurs moved up from No. 6 to No. 5 in team merchandise sales.
The Celtics have not been among the Top 5 in team merchandise sales since the start of the 2012-13 season, according to the NBA.
Dropping out of the Top 5 were the Los Angeles Lakers (No. 3 to No. 6) and the New York Knicks (No. 5 to out of the Top Ten, with the NBA not listing their position).
The Warriors had four players among the Top 11, with No. 10. Klay Thompson and No. 11 Draymond Green joining Curry and Durant.
The Celtics’ Isaiah Thomas moved up seven spots to No. 7 after debuting on the last list at No. 14.
Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks earned his highest-ranking ever at No. 8
.
The Washington Wizards’ John Wall at No. 12 returned to the list for the first time since the end of the 2014-15 season.
Among the new jerseys expected to make the next NBA Store list are Lonzo Ball (Los Angeles Lakers), Markelle Fultz (Philadelphia 76ers), Chris Paul (Houston Rockets) and Jimmy Butler (Minnesota Timberwolves).
Specific sales figures were not released by the league.
