• Boston’s Public Improvement Commission has approved a request by the Red Sox to change the name of Yawkey Way outside of Fenway Park, named after former owner Tom Yawkey (1933-1976), back to its original name, Jersey Street, following allegations about Yawkey (who died in 1976) being a racist. According to the Red Sox, “Today’s vote is an important step in our ongoing effort to make Fenway Park a place where everyone feels welcome.”

• Dale Earnhardt Jr. has written a book, Racing to the Finish: My Story, scheduled to be released Oct. 16. He calls it a “candid, first-person account of what seemed at first as a minor racing accident but ultimately forced life-changing decisions.”

• The NBA has signed a multi-year deal with Perform Media that will see the digital sports content-#media group manage the NBA’s official Web sites in 15+ international markets, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, India, Japan, Mexico and Spain. The NBA said it has 20 such localized sites

• The Drone Racing League has expended its presence in France with  a 2018 race in France at the Allianz Riviera stadium and a media partnership with Groupe AB. DRL has also signed an extension of the Allianz title partnership of the DRL Championship Race Series for an additional five years.

Michael Waltrip Racing Drives Sponsorship Victories With Toyota, Best Western

November 16, 2009: At a time when many sports sponsorship deals are being questioned, reevaluated and dissolved, Michael Waltrip Racing has signed extensions with two of its staunchest partners: Best Western International and Toyota.

Best Western has extended its partnership with Michael Waltrip Racing for the 2010 Nascar season, which will mark their seventh consecutive season together. Toyota has renewed its deal to continue as manufacturer for MWR through 2010; Waltrip, a two-time Daytona 500 winner, formed his own racing team in 2007 when Toyota joined Nascar's Sprint Cup Series.

Financial terms were not released for either deal.

"It was a great weekend for MWR," Waltrip said in a statement. "We announced our Toyota extension and Best Western [is] coming back to our team as a sponsor. I'm really proud of the effort our team put together."

The 46-year-old Waltrip plans to drive part-time beginning in 2010. Other MWR partners include Coke Zero, Aaron's, NAPA, Sherwin Williams and Oakley.

Best Western will serve as primary sponsor of the No. 00 Toyota Camry driven by the 2009 Coca-Cola 600 winner David Reutimann for the Nascar Sprint Cup Series race to be held at the Phoenix International Raceway on April 10, 2010. Best Western will also serve as an associate sponsor of the No. 00 for the remainder of the 2010 Nascar Sprint Cup Series schedule.

“Michael and David have been wonderful ambassadors for Best Western on and off the track, and continue to serve as an ideal fit for our brand. Both drivers have loyal fans, much like our hotel chain,” Dorothy Dowling, Best Western’s svp-marketing and sales, said in a statement. “This renewed partnership with Michael Waltrip Racing continues Best Western’s support of racing, and our quest to help race fans save on hotel rooms.”
