Under Armour Rides FIFA World Cup, Summer Olympics '16 Wave To Brazil

Special to NYSportsJournalism.com

March 12, 2014: Brazil is a hot and fertile marketing ground with the coming FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics.

With that in mind, performance sportswear and shoe company Under Armour has unveiled an expansion into Brazil, where its products will be available in more than 70 of the country’s premium points of sale and Web sites, including the company's own Brazilian-based e-commerce destination.

"Launching the Under Armour brand in Brazil is another critical step towards reaching our international expansion goals and driving our continued growth throughout the world," Kevin Plank,  founder and CEO for Under Armour, said in a statement. "The country's passion and commitment to sport is incredible, and we look forward to empowering Brazilian athletes and bringing them game-changing apparel, footwear and equipment."

Plank unveiled the expansion during a media conference in São Paulo, where he was joined by Ironman world champion Chris McCormack and MMA champion Georges St-Pierre, both of whom are Under Armour spokesmen.

Under Armour did not reveal the cost of investment or what it expected in return financially.

"As the nation prepares to host the world’s biggest sporting events, this is an exciting opportunity for Under Armour."

However, the Baltimore-based company said it would offer a "broad array of training and running apparel and footwear in the initial launch phase." That includes UA SpeedForm Apollo  running shoes and training apparel across men’s, women’s and youth categories featuring HeatGear ArmourVent, both of which would be supplemented with a series of sport-specific collections.

According to Marcelo Ferreira, managing director for Under Armour Brazil, “Brazil is a region with a rich athletic history and focuses on sports as a part of everyday life. As the nation prepares to host the world’s biggest sporting events, this is an exciting opportunity for Under Armour to identify with the passion Brazilians have for active lifestyles and to provide them with the most innovative performance products in the market.”
