Domino's Delivers Next Athletic Director To University of Michigan

David BrandonJanuary 5, 2010: The University of Michigan has delivered on its quest to find a new athletic director, naming David Brandon, the chairman and CEO of Domino's Pizza, to fill the position.

Brandon, a graduate of the university who was a defensive lineman under legendary football coach Bo Schembechler, signed a five-year deal that takes effect March 8. He will replace Bill Martin, who plans to retire in September after 10 years with Michigan. The Michigan Wolverines football program has produced three Heisman Trophy winners: Tom Harmon, Desmond Howard and Charles Woodson. The football stadium seats more than 107,000.

Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Domino's said in a statement that its board of directors plans to elect J. Patrick Doyle as its next chairman and CEO.  Domino's said that Brandon would work with the company as a "special advisor for the balance of 2010."

Brandon was appointed Domino's chairman and CEO in March 1999. Prior to that he had served as chairman, president and CEO of marketing firm Valassis Communications, headquartered in Livonia, Mich.

“It is my distinct honor and privilege to have this opportunity to serve the university in yet another way,” Brandon said in a statement. “My participation as a student-athlete at U-M has made a profound impact on my life and career, and I fully understand and respect the important role our athletic programs play in helping to shape the culture and image of our university community.”

According to Mary Sue Coleman, president at the University of Michigan, “With his widely acclaimed leadership skills, business acumen, long-term involvement with the university and personal knowledge of the challenges and rewards of being a student athlete, David Brandon is an ideal candidate for athletic director. I am confident that he will carry on the tradition of excellence in U-M athletics as we enter a new era.”
