Topps Asks Consumers To Select Next Jackie, Jeter, Aaron, Ryan, Williams

By Barry Janoff

September 23, 2015: Sports fans love to chant, "We're No. 1! We're No. 1!"

Topps cards is asking, "Who's No. 1?"

The iconic card and collectibles company has unveiled a multi-platform activation asking people to decide which MLB player will hold the coveted position of being Card No. 1 in the 2016 Topps Series 1 Baseball set, which also will be the 65th anniversary of Topps Baseball.

The list includes more than 30 players, one from each MLB team, including Kris Bryant (Chicago Cubs), Jacob deGrom (New York Mets), Bryce Harper (Washington Nationals), Buster Posey (San Francisco Giants) and Mike Trout (Los Angeles Angels).

Alex Rodriguez, who might be named as the MLB Comeback Player of the Year, represents the New York Yankees.

There also is an option for people to write in a vote for a current player not on the list.

Derek Jeter was No. 1 in the 2015 Set. Nolan Ryan was No. 1 in 1990. The 1969 World Series champion New York Mets occupied the No. 1 card in 1970. Ted Williams was No. 1 in 1958.

“Being featured on Card No. 1 in the Topps Baseball flagship has been an honor Topps has been able to bestow on baseball players for over 60 years,” Clay Luraschi, Topps’ vp-product development, said in a statement.

“We have featured stars such as Jackie Robinson, Ted Williams, Hank Aaron, Nolan Ryan, Bryce Harper and Derek Jeter," said Luraschi. "It’s a coveted spot and we wanted our collectors to be involved in that decision.”

In addition to those players mentioned, the list for the No. 1 card includes Adrian Beltre (Texas Rangers), Alex Gordon (Kansas City Royals), Adam Jones (Baltimore Orioles), Clayton Kershaw (Los Angeles Dodgers), Andrew McCutchen (Pittsburgh Pirates), David Ortiz (Boston Red Sox), Chris Sale (Chicago White Sox) and Giancarlo Stanton (Miami Marlins).

The first round of voting is being conducted on the Topps Blog now through Oct. 4.

A Final Five Vote will take place from Oct. 5-11. The winner will be announced on Oct. 12 on the Topps Blog.
