January 28, 2016: Mike Trout has received numerous accolades during the first five years of his MLB career.
Now, the Los Angeles Angels outfielder has one that puts him on-deck with the likes of Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Ted Williams and Derek Jeter.
Harper has been selected to appear on card No. 1 in the 2016 Topps Baseball Series 1, which represents the 65th anniversary of baseball cards from the company.
The set is scheduled to hit retail on Feb. 3.
Trout was selected by a vote conducted among fans, which launched in September with more than 30 players, one from each MLB team.
“It's awesome. I appreciate the support from fans across MLB,” Trout said in a statement. “It’s pretty special to be the No. 1 card for Topps."
“The first card in the Topps baseball set has historically been given to top players or has been meaningful,” David Leiner, vp and GM-North American Sports and Entertainment for Topps, said in a statement. “This time around, we wanted our great collectors to be part of the 65th Topps Baseball set, and they made their mark by picking one of the best players in baseball today.”
The Final Five were named in early October, including Kris Bryant (Chicago Cubs), Josh Donaldson (Toronto Blue Jays), Bryce Harper (Washington Nationals), Buster Posey (San Francisco Giants) and Harper.
Topps did not reveal totals for the Final Five fan voting.
Topps is expected to support the release of its Baseball Series 1 set with multi-platform marketing, including Internet, social media and POP.
According to Clay Luraschi, Topps’ vp-product development, “Being featured on Card No. 1 in the Topps Baseball flagship has been an honor Topps has been able to bestow on baseball players for over 60 years."
“We have featured stars such as Jackie Robinson, Ted Williams, Hank Aaron, Nolan Ryan, Bryce Harper and Derek Jeter," said Luraschi. "It’s a coveted spot and we wanted our collectors to be involved in that decision.”
Jeter was No. 1 in the 2015 Set. Nolan Ryan was No. 1 in 1990. The 1969 World Series champion New York Mets occupied the No. 1 card in 1970. Ted Williams was No. 1 in 1958.
The initial list also included Jacob deGrom (New York Mets), Alex Rodriguez (New York Yankees), Andrew McCutchen (Pittsburgh Pirates), David Ortiz (Boston Red Sox), Chris Sale (Chicago White Sox) and Giancarlo Stanton (Miami Marlins)
The image on Trout’s No. 1 card was shot on Sept. 26, 2015, when he scaled the outfield wall in Angels Stadium, extended his body over it and robbed the Seattle Mariners’ Jesus Montero of a three-run homer, according to Topps.
The four-time All-Star won the American League Rookie of the Year award in 2012 and the American League MVP award in 2014, in addition to finishing second in voting three other times.
Trout's endorsement deals include Nike, BodyArmor and Subway.
His stats to date include a .304 BA, 139 home runs and 361 RBI.
