• Bluberi Gaming has signed a deal with WWE to develop a series of licensed slot games featuring WWE Superstars and Legends. Among those to be featured include John Cena, Triple H, Becky Lynch, Roman Reigns and Ronda Rousey, along with such Legends as Hulk Hogan, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and Shawn Michaels. The first WWE series of slot games is scheduled to hit casinos October 2020.

• HarperCollins Publishers said it has acquired world rights to Back, the first memoir authored by Tiger Woods. According to Woods, “This book is my definitive story. It’s in my words and expresses my thoughts. It describes how I feel and what’s happened in my life.” A publication date was not given.

• Turner Sports’ eLeague has signed a deal with tech solutions and services provider CDW to “create enhanced fan experiences across eLeague’s properties on TV, digital, social and in-arena.” The alliance also names CDW an “official arena partner” for eLeague and the Rocket League Championship Series. • San Manuel Casino, under the auspices of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, has signed a deal to become a Founding Partner for Allegiant Stadium, scheduled to open at the home of the Raiders for the 2020 NFL season when the franchise relocates from Oakland to Las Vegas.

• Halloween this year is Oct. 31, and retailers, marketers and consumers are ready for another season of trick-or-treat. Total spend on Halloween 2019 is expected to reach $8.8 billion according to the National Retail Federation, Washington, DC. Full story here. 

• The Paley Center for Media, NY, will honor the 100th season of the NFL with a new exhibit: "A Century of Football: Celebrating the NFL’s 100th Season," free and open to the public (thru Oct. 27).

Top Sports Marketers Of The Year 2018: Springhill Entertainment-Uninterrupted

January 2019: LeBron James will not shut up and dribble.

And he will not stay in his lane because there are so many lanes on which he travels.

When James headed west from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Los Angeles Lakers, he not only took his basketball skills but his burgeoning creative and production skills, as well.

Over the past year, James and partner Maverick Carter have been very busy.

James, Carter and their Uninterrupted digital media company are the powers behind The Shop, a casual talk show-type setting that seeks to emulate experiences James and many others have had in which the local barbershop is the focal point for sometimes easy, sometimes heated, conversation among friends and others from the neighborhood.

The Shop is exactly why we created Uninterrupted,” James said via the media company. “Anyone who has been in a real barbershop, like the ones where I grew up, knows why this show can be so incredible.

In October, HBO Sports unveiled a SpringHill Entertainment production of the college sports documentary film, Student Athlete.

CBS Entertainment has ordered a ten-episode series with the working title, Million Dollar Mile, whose executive producing companies include Springhill Entertainment.

CBS described Million Dollar Mile — scheduled to permiere March 27 — as a “high-stakes competition series that challenges everyday athletes’ physical and mental toughness like never before with an opportunity to change their lives forever.

According to Carter, “This show takes competition series to a whole new level. It’s intense, it’s entertaining and it has a twist that will have people on the edge of their seats while also creating an opportunity to change the contestants’ lives.

“It’s exactly the type of aspirational content SpringHill Entertainment is about, and we can’t wait for people to experience it.”

Showtime, a subsidiary of CBS Corp., is airing a three-part documentary series, Shut Up and Dribble, from executive producers James and Carter.

Warriors of Liberty City, a six-part documentary series from Springhill Entertainment, debuted on Starz in September. It follows a season with the youth football team Liberty City Warriors and shows how the tough Miami neighborhood has produced a number of NFL stars.

In October, HBO aired Student Athlete, a documentary sharing stories of five current and former collegiate athletes and “revealing the exploitative world of high-revenue college sports.”

Also on air in 2018 from the production company: The Wall (NBC) challenge game show; and Best Shot (YouTube Premium), with former NBA player Jay Williams mentoring the Newark (NJ) High School hoops team.

Perhaps his most impactful move of the year, James and the LeBron James Family Foundation over the summer opened the I Promise School in his hometown of Akron, OH, providing education, meals, transportation and other perks to 240 “at-risk” third- and fourth-grade kids, with plans to expand in the coming years.

He was named the 2018 AP Male Sports Athlete of the Year for the third consecutive time. (Serena Williams was named the AP Female Athlete of the Year.)
