‘Perspective, Passion’: Mike Tomlin Joining NBC Sports ‘Football Night In America’

April 27, 2026: Stating that "When Mike Tomlin talks, people listen,” NBC Sports has signed the former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach to be part of the ’"Football Night in America” roster as a studio analyst.
According to NBC Sports, “Tomlin will draw on his 19‑year head coaching career and just-off-the-sideline perspective to react to the day’s games, put the league’s defining moments in context, and preview that night’s Sunday Night Football matchup.”
Beginning this coming season, Football Night America will travel every weekend to the NFL stadiums where the games are being played.
“When Mike Tomlin talks, people listen,” Sam Flood, executive producer and president, production, NBC Sports, said via the network. “He’s one of the most iconic and respected coaches and voices in the NFL.
“We’re excited that this Super Bowl-winning coach is coming straight from the sideline to Football Night in America. His perspective and passion for the game will add an authentic new voice to NFL Sundays.”
Before leaving the team this past February, Tomlin spent 19 seasons as head coach of the Steelers (2007–25), compiling 193 regular‑season wins and 13 postseason appearances, without a losing season.
Tomlin led the Steelers to a victory in Super Bowl XLIII, defeating the Arizona Cardinals 27–23, and becoming the youngest head coach in NFL history to win a Super Bowl at age 36.
Tomlin also had a prominent role on the influential NFL Competition Committee for many years.
“I’m humbled and honored to come alongside the best group in sports, and really looking forward to the challenge of presenting the NFL to fellow football lovers on Sunday nights,” said Tomlin via NBC Sports.
“I’ve been a part of a team since 1980, and I can’t wait to join this one and help continue delivering high quality coverage along with my new teammates on Football Night in America.”
Football Night in America has been the most‑watched studio show in sports in all 20 of its seasons on NBC and serves as the lead‑in to Sunday Night Football.
The show, hosted by Maria Taylor, provides fans with expert analysis, features, and insights from across the NFL landscape each week, both looking back at the day’s action and spotlighting that night’s matchup.
Addressing his decision to leave the Steelers after nearly two decades, Tomlin told Taylor during an interview on NBC’s Sunday night’s NBA Showtime, “"It's probably not an overnight decision. But it's probably not something that I could articulate or share with people. There's a loneliness with leadership.
"I just thought it was a good time for me, personally. And by that, I mean just where I am in life. And I thought it was a good time for the organization, to be quite honest with you. We didn't have a lot of success in the playoffs in recent years. and there’s just some veteran players there, man. Guys like Cam Heyward and T.J. Watt and [Chris] Boswell that I thought just that were worthy of the excitement and the optimism associated with new leadership."
