T-Mobile Steps Up To The Plate At Home Run Derby For Little League Baseball

By Barry Janoff

July 2, 2019: T-Mobile, the official wireless provider for MLB, will return to the All-Star Game with a full plate of activation, led by a donation of $250,000 to Little League Baseball and Softball that will increase based on long balls hit during the T-Mobile Home Run Derby.

The T-Mobile Home Run Derby, scheduled for July 8 in Cleveland’s Progressive Field (ESPN), will feature eight players.

They include Ronald Acuña Jr. (Atlanta Braves), Pete Alonso (New York Mets), Josh Bell (Pittsburgh Pirates), Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (Toronto Blue Jays), Carlos Santana (Cleveland Indians) and Christian Yelich (Milwaukee Brewers).

The T-Mobile Home Run Derby match-ups will be named during a special T-Mobile Home Run Derby Bracket Show on July 3 (ESPN).

In addition to the $250,000, T-Mobile will donate an extra $1,000 per home run and $5,000 per magenta bonus ball home run.

Last year, the T-Mobile Home Run Derby donation was $450,000.

This past April, T-Mobile and CEO John Legere donated $100,000 to support local leagues rebuilding in Puerto Rico.

T-Mobile in March extended its alliance with MLB and also added Little League Baseball to its partnerships.

T-Mobile has been an official partner with MLB since 2013, and in 2016 became title sponsor for the T-Mobile Home Run Derby during All-Star Game week.

In December, T-Mobile enhanced its MLB presence by signing a 25-year naming rights deal for the Seattle Mariners home venue, formerly Safeco Field, not T-Mobile Park.

The deal was put at $3-$4 million annually by industry analysts.

“We love showing up big for baseball fans — and at this year’s T-Mobile Home Run Derby, it’s no different,” Legere said via the Bellevue, Wash.-based company.

The telecom company is currently in the final stages of a multibillion-dollar merger with Sprint.

“We’re all in, supporting our future baseball and softball sluggers with a $250K-plus donation to Little League, making America’s game more accessible for kids and families around the country.”

T-Mobile said funds raised would help make local Little League programs more “accessible for kids and families around the country through equipment grants and financial assistance to help make youth participation more affordable.”

T-Mobile is brining people into the action via the T-Mobile Home Run Derby Bracket Challenge, offering an opportunity to win $250,000 via a dedicated Web site or the MLB AtBat app. (Details here).

The company will have presence in Cleveland throughout the All-Star Game event, including  the 2019 T-Mobile All-Star Hat Shop and T-Mobile All-Star Zipline at Play Ball Park.

“We love showing up big for baseball fans — and at this year’s T-Mobile Home Run Derby, it’s no different."

On T-Mobile Home Run Derby night, T-Mobile will host an exclusive Derby After Dark event, hosted by Francisco Lindor (Cleveland Indians), with scheduled performances from Shaquille O’Neal and DJ Irie., as well as celebrity guests and MLB All-Stars.

According to Legere, “We’re here for the fans, with so much fun on the ground in Cleveland and on social, so everyone can get in on the action. Let’s play ball!”

In addition to the traditional T-Mobile Home Run Derby telecast on ESPN, ESPN2 will offer an alternative viewing experience for the second straight year.

The T-Mobile Home Run Derby Statcast edition powered by AWS will feature an analytics-driven presentation including 3D spray charts of home run paths and exit velocity.
