Tiger Vs. Phil $9M Match Seeks Marketing, PPV History On Thanksgiving Weekend

August 22, 2018: The PPV numbers may not reach Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao or Mayweather Jr.-Conor McGregor heights — and may not hit the numbers currently predicted for McGregor's UFC match scheduled for Oct. 6 vs. Khabib Nurmagomedovbut based on name power and curiosity, the one-on-one showdown between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson could be historic in its own right.

WarnerMedia’s Turner division said it has secured worldwide media distribution rights to “The Match,” a head-to-head, $9 million winner-take-all, 18-hole duel between iconic golfers Woods and Mickelson.

According to David Levy, Turner president, “For the first time since AT&T’s acquisition of Time Warner (now WarnerMedia), Turner, DirecTV and HBO will present a multi-faceted presentation of the live event and accompanying content across a vast array of platforms.”

The competition between two golfers who have won a combined 19 Majors — will be hosted by MGM Resorts International and held Nov. 23 during Thanksgiving weekend on Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas.

The competition will be distributed across Turner, WarnerMedia and AT&T platforms including live PPV coverage through Turner’s B/R Live, AT&T’s DirecTV and AT&T U-verse.

It will also be offered to other on-demand platforms.

The Top Ten PPV buys in North America are currenlty all related to boxing and/or MMA.

The Mayweather Jr.-Pacquiao fight on May 2, 2015 topped 4.4 million PPV buys (some estimate more than 4.6 million) in North America, generating more than $400 million in revenue, according to the organizers.

The Mayweather Jr.-McGregor bout Aug. 26, 2017, hit 4.3 million PPV buys in North America and 6.7 million globally, taking in $700 million, according to the organizers.

The Match certainly would set a record for golf and could hit the Top Five, according to analysts.

PPV cost was not yet shared.

Turner and MGM Resorts International have also not disclosed who would actually be invited to be on-site to follow the golfers from hole-to-hole or how much it might cost for a ticket to be up-close and personal to golf history.

Of no small matter, marketing will be in full force.

Woods’ partners include Bridgestone Gold, Hero, Kowa, Monster Energy, Nike, TaylorMade and Upper Deck.

Mickelson’s marketing partners include Amgen, Callaway, Workday, Grayhawk, Intrepid Financial, KPMG, Rolex and newest partner Mizzen + Main.

Turner Sports said it would produce all live event coverage while also serving as the exclusive sales and sponsorship partner.

Turner Sports and its Turner Ignite Sports will “work closely with marketing partners to elevate their brands within this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, tapping into award-winning live events, experiential and creative marketing solutions.”

Although $9 million is a major prize, the real reward could be for golf itself. Thanksgiving weekend is traditionally about NFL and college football, as well as NBA and NHL games.

This event would reach not just golf fans but fringe and even non-golf enthusiasts.

HBO Sports plans a 24/7 series leading up to the match.

Bleacher Report’s House of Highlights will offer comprehensive highlights and behind-the-scenes content.

In addition, Turner’s TNT will air programming with select content from the event in the weeks following the live competition.

Turner International will facilitate distribution of live PPV access to the event outside the U.S.

“The iconic Tiger Woods and five-time Major Champion Phil Mickelson are generational talents who have transcended the game of golf and their rivalry continues to be one of the most compelling in sports,” said Levy in a statement.

“This one-of-a-kind, winner-take-all matchup provides a great opportunity to show fans the benefits of AT&T and WarnerMedia coming together.”

As part of the competition, Woods and Mickelson will “selectively make side-challenges against one another during the match (raising) the stakes by challenging the other to a long-drive, closest-to-the-pin or similar competition during a hole as they play their match.”

That money will be donated to the winning golfer’s charity of choice.
