Tiger Woods Becomes A Multi-Player In Nike's Sport Of Golf Effort With Attitude

By Barry Janoff

June 11, 2013: One adage often credited to Mark Twain is that golf is "a good walk spoiled."

A new spot from Nike Golf starring Tiger Woods take umbrage with the naysayers and envisions golf as a good sport toiled.

The commercial is part of the marketing buildup to the 2013 U.S. Open, being played this week at the Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, PA. It specifically supports Nike Golf's new like of signature Woods golf shoes, TW '14, with the tagline, "For the athlete in every golfer."

In the spot, Woods is seen putting, driving and teeing off. But "The Sport of Golf" Nike spot comes with the attitude offered by Woods, "I treat golf as a sport. I let other people treat it like a hobby."

In the opening shot, we see Woods teeing off, but behind him is a man with a starter's pistol, comparing golf to the beginning of a track and field event. When Woods watches a putt rim around and then away from a hole, a boxing referee comes in and begins to count Woods out.

As Woods moves to the next hole, a wide-shot shows people in the gallery banging and waving Thundersticks, as they would to disrupt a basketball player about to take a foul shot. As he then swings through a long drive, Woods is backed by a catcher and a home plate umpire.

Finally, Woods sinks a putt to close out his round, and he is swarmed by fans recreating the moments after a college basketball team wins a game. (See the full spot here.)

The commercial will air during sports programming and throughout the U.S. Open, with Rounds 1 and 2 on ESPN and Rounds 3 and 4 on NBC.
