Ten Things (At Least) Tim Tebow Can Do Besides Be An NFL Quarterback

By Barry Janoff

January 31, 2014: Tim Tebow doesn't need no stinking NFL contract.

At least according to a campaign from T-Mobile breaking on national TV during Super Bowl XLVIII on Fox.

Tebow, who won a Heisman trophy in college and two national championships with Florida, has played for the Denver Broncos and New York Jets. But he has not officially appeared on an NFL field since he was cut from the practice squad of the New England Patriots last August.

The Bellevue, Wash.-based T-Mobile effort actually touts the fact that Tebow is currently not under contract to any NFL team. That, Tebow offers in the new spots, is also what makes T-Mobile the best choice.

“Why would anyone in their right mind stay in a situation that restricts them?” John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile US, said in a statement. “We want everyone to be able to exercise their own choice which comes with contract freedom. We thought Tim Tebow was the perfect choice for these spots. And, like T-Mobile, he has the grit, determination and passion for doing the right thing.”

T-Mobile will air two 30-second spots during the Big Game on Feb. 2. They can both be traced to a 60-second spot that is running on YouTube. Thirty-second spots were going for upward of $4 million, according to Fox.

“T-Mobile came to me with a great idea around a fun and creative Super Bowl spot. I love what they’ve been doing and how they treat their customers," Tebow said in a statement." It was a blast filming all of the various scenes, and working with T-Mobile to highlight their concept around no contracts for their customers.”

"Tim Tebow here," he says to open one spot. "Everyone thinks I want [an NFL] contract. But without one, I've done so much this year."

Among the things that Tebow has done during his time away from the NFL:

• Delivered a baby ("Is that Tim Tebow?" the mom-to-be asks the dad in the delivery room.)

• Tracked down, captured and took a selfie photo with Big Foot.

• Revealed a plan for world piece at a global summit. ("We can save the whales. We can talk to animals. And we can bring world peace!")

• Fulfilled a lifelong dream of playing football on the Moon.

• Rode a bull in a rodeo.

• Became a fireman, where he saved puppies from a burning building.

• Toured the world as a heavy metal rock star.

• Did his own stunts as the star of the movie, Illegal Formation.

• Became a stand-up comic. ("I mean, talk about illegal use of the hands!")

• Became a world-champion chess player.

Many of the scenarios are fleshed out in their own 30-second versions.

"Bottom line," says Tebow,. "Contracts hold you back." (See the full spot here.)

Tebow has appeared in other marketing campaigns, most notably for Jockey and  TiVo. He also has deals with EA Sports, Soul Electronics and PDQ quick-serve restaurants. In December, he signed a deal with ESPN to become an analyst for the new Southeastern Conference Network, scheduled to launch prior to the 2014 college football season. He appeared on-camera during ESPN's coverage of the BCS National Championship game.

"I feel like I'm the best that I've ever been as a quarterback right now. I hope I get the opportunity to show that," Tebow said in a statement at that time. "But I'm also looking forward to being part of SEC Nation and part of ESPN.

""I'm not sure what's ahead of me. I'm very excited to have this opportunity at ESPN. But who knows what the next few months will hold?"
