Taco Bell Beefs Up 'Steal A Base, Steal A Taco' Campaign For World Series

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

October 15, 2018:
With MLB’s two League Championship series underway, the Fall Classic, due to begin Oct. 23, could see the return of the two teams from the 2017 World Series.

But even if the defending champion Houston Astros (now playing the Boston Red Sox) and defending NL champion Los Angeles Dodgers (facing the Milwaukee Brewers) don’t make it back, Taco Bell said it would bring back its ”Steal a Base, Steal a Taco" promotion for the seventh time for the 2018 World Series presented by YouTube TV.

As in the past, the first player to successfully steal a base during the Fall Classic gets everyone in America a free Doritos Locos Taco, with the give-away scheduled for Nov. 1. (Details here.)

What is new to the mix: Topps is in as a partner, offering trading cards of the previous six players who jump-started the taco bonus with the first stolen base in their respective World Series. (See checklist below.)

A seventh Topps Now card, featuring the player who nabs the first stolen base of the 2018 World Series, will be available from Topps.com 24 hours after the base is stolen.

Taco Bell will support with multi-media marketing, including TV, digital, social media, POP and in-stadium activation.

An anchor TV spot, "Taco Hero," tells how in 2017 Cameron Maybin of the Houston Astros "slid into the taco history books" by stealing the first base of the World Series in the 11th inning of Game 2 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, then asks, "Who will be this year's Taco Hero?"

In addition, Taco Bell said it would back the promotion with the first Steal a Base caps. A limited collection of caps will be available online via Taco Bell's Taco Shop.

The six Steal a Base Topps cards will be available in local restaurants near ball parks hosting the World Series beginning with Game 1 and willalso be included in any cap purchase, until supplies last.

The Topps cards pack will include six Taco Hero cards each with their own exclusive imagery and stats.

"Every year, we're overwhelmed with the excitement from our fans when combining America's favorite pastime with America's favorite tacos," Marisa Thalberg, global chief brand officer for Taco Bell Corp., said via the company.

"Now, we're knocking that out of the park by introducing even more ways for our fans to experience and commemorate the Taco Hero."

Also added to the mix this season, Taco Bell said that once the first base is stolen, people can claim a free Doritos Locos Taco online if they have previously registered via Taco Bell's Web site or app. (Details here.)

According to Taco Bell, "History shows it's not a matter of 'if' but 'when' a base will be stolen."

The earliest "Steal a Base" was in 2016 when Francisco Lindor of the Cleveland Indians swiped a bag in the first inning of Game 1 1st  against the Chicago Cubs.

Taco fans had to wait the longest last year when the first stolen base wasn't recorded until the 11th inning of Game 2 by Maybin of the Astros.

According to Noah Garden, MLB evp-commerce, "We've created a fun tradition for our fans with Taco Bell and the 'Steal a Base, Steal a Taco' promotion.

“It makes for a unique moment every year during the World Series and certainly the fans will have their eyes on the first stolen base of the Fall Classic."
