Selection Of Site For Super Bowl XLVIII To Be Shown Live From Dallas

May 19, 2010: The NFL, which has made must-see and marketing events out of its Scouting Combine and NFL Draft, anticipates such high interest in the selection of its next open Super Bowl site that for the first time it is putting sections of the decision process and the announcement itself on national TV.

Three sites have submitted bids to host Super Bowl XLVIII, to be played February 2014 — South Florida, Tampa and New York-New Jersey — with the selection to be determined on May 25 during the NFL Spring Meeting in Dallas. Representatives from the three sites will be making presentations to league owners and officials, including commissioner Roger Goodell.

NFL Network will air a 90-minute Super Bowl XLVIII Selection Show that day beginning at 3 PM ET, during which time the winning site will be revealed. The announcement will also be available for viewing live on NFL.com.

If New York-New Jersey wins, it would be the first time the Super Bowl would be played outdoors in a cold-air climate. The game would be played at the new Meadowlands Stadium, home of the Giants and Jets, which is opening in time for the 2010 NFL season. South Florida hosted Super Bowl XLIV this past February at Sun Life Stadium and also has been home to nine other Super Bowls. Tampa Bay's Raymond James Stadium last hosted the game in 2009 for Super Bowl XLIII; Tampa has hosted three other Super Bowls.

Super Bowls have been held in cold weather climates, but in domed stadiums, in 2006 (Super Bowl XL at Ford Field, Detroit), 1992 (Super Bowl XXVI in Minneapolis at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome) and 1982 (Super Bowl XVI at the Silverdome in Pontiac, Mich.).

Coverage on NFL Network will also include features on each of the three cities offering a look inside their preparation for the bid, with interviews from key committee members and clips from each city’s presentation to the owners. NFL Network will also be stationed within the “war room” of each site for live reaction and interviews with the winning city’s team owner and committee chair.

In addition, the Super Bowl XLVIII Selection Show will also look at planning for Super Bowl XLV in February 2011 at Cowboys Stadium, including interviews with commissioner Goodell and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

After Super Bowl XLV in Dallas, upcoming games are Super Bowl XLVI at Lucas Oil Field in Indianapolis and Super Bowl XLVII at the Superdome in Louisiana.
