Michigan, Georgia, Alabama Top In-Demand Tickets, Merch For College Football 2019

By Barry Janoff

August 13, 2019: The defending national champion Clemson Tigers, Michigan, Georgia, Texas, Alabama, Ohio State and LSU each have strong football programs and loyal supporters nationwide.

That includes buying tickets to games and buying merchandise to show their true colors.

StubHub, the online event ticket marketplace, has released its third-annual College Football Preview, which shows top-trending teams, hottest-selling games and most popular conferences heading into the 2019 season.

As the season approaches, the five most in-demand programs based on StubHub ticket sales are the Michigan Wolverines, Georgia Bulldogs, Texas Longhorns, Alabama Crimson Tide and Penn State Nittany Lions.

Concurrently, the five college football team based on merchandise sales on eBay (July 2018-July 2019) are Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, LSU and Michigan.

Clemson comes in at No. 7 on both lists, according to  StubHub, which is a division of eBay.

"This year's college football demand is largely being driven by fans still fired up from last year's surprises and comebacks," Jill Krimmel, general manager of sports for StubHub, said via the San Francisco-based firm.

"At StubHub, we're seeing remarkable demand for Texas and Georgia, and clearly, support for Clemson is strong after winning the National Championship last year, bringing them back into the Top 10 in-demand teams."

According to StubHub, the Wolverines regained the No. 1 spot in ticket sales after dropping to No. 2 in 2018 (behind Alabama).

Michigan was StubHub’s top team for four straight years (2014-2017) and has never fallen below the No. 2 spot.

Demand for Michigan games is up 46% on StubHub since 2018, based on ticket sales, with the team’s most in-demand game of the season at Penn State (Oct. 19).

In addition, eBay’s merchandise sales for the team have doubled in growth since spring of last year.

However, OSU ranks No. 1 with an average of ten Ohio State items sold on eBay per hour.

Alabama is close behind at No. 2, with only 2% fewer sales than Ohio.

At No. 3, Georgia supporters buy team gear at an average of eight items on eBay per hour, according to StubHub.

“In advance of the 2019 season, we’re taking a look at where loyalties lie among our shoppers,” Sam Bright, vp-merchandising at eBay, said via the company.

“The insights are telling. We know the big, southern schools like the University of Alabama and University of Georgia will have powerful fan bases yet again, with sales of their merchandise making up nearly 80 percent of the top-selling teams on our site.”

The National Championship Game is scheduled for Jan. 13, 2020 in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.
