Oldies Stones, Who, McCartney Show New School Musicians How To Sell Tickets

By Barry Janoff

September 12, 2016: The usual suspects are sitting atop the list of top-selling concerts for Fall 2016 — led by Adele, Drake, Beyoncé, Maroon 5 and Kanye West — but it a bevy of classic rockers who are showing new school musicians how to really sell tickets.

Adele, who led all summer concert toursin ticket sales, is primed to do lead her peers in the fall, as well, according to online ticket marketplace StubHub. She is on pace in terms of both overall sales and sales per show to "outsell pop diva Taylor Swift’s 2015 fall tour schedule and become the top-selling artist of 2016."

StubHub said that based on overall ticket sales at its site for shows from Labor Day to Thanksgiving 2016, median ticket prices per genre are topped by pop acts at $299, rock acts at $217, hip-hop at $175 and country at $122.

But all the acts in the StubHub Top Ten are likely to be left in the rear view mirror by Desert Trip, a two-weekend festival this October at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, Calif.

Each of the performers does well on their own; together in the same festival (though not on-stage at the same time), records are expected to be broken by a roster that ranks among the best-selling recording artists of all-time.

Oct. 7 and Oct. 14 will see onstage the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan.

Oct. 8 and Oct. 15 will see onstage Paul McCartney and Neil Young.

Oct. 9 and Oct. 16 will see onstage Roger Waters of Pink Floyd and The Who.

Promoter AEG Live said tickets — about 70,000 per day — sold out in five hours when they went on sale this past May, with box office likely to gross more than $150 million.

That would be $60 million more than the current record of $84 million from the 2015 Coachella Festival.

Anticipating a lot of thirsty concert-goers, marketing partners include Absolut, Coors Light, Corona Extra, Sierra Nevada and Heineken.

To date, Florida Georgia Line has been the best deal of the fall, per StubHub, with a ticket selling for $6 to the group’s show at PNC Music Pavilion in Charlotte (Sept. 10).

Concurrently, Drake has commanded the highest price with more than $3,900 spent on a ticket for the artist’s show at Staples Center in Los Angeles (Sept. 9).

And while they have fewer than ten dates, all in November, currently scheduled, Temple of the Dog made the StubHub Top Ten with their reunion tour in honor of the 25th anniversary of their lone album, offering an average ticket price of $217, and tickets in their hometown of Seattle going for upward of $575.

The group features Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell and Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, Mike McCready and Eddie Vedder.
