'Rookies' DeRozan, Ginobili Have New Roles In Spurs H*E*B NBA Commercials

October 3, 2018: The annual tradition of San Antonio-based supermarket H*E*B filming humorous commercials with members of the San Antonio Spurs is taking place this week in conjunction with the Spurs training camp in preparation for the 2018-19 NBA season.

H*E*B’s headliners for this season’s series of commercials are LaMarcus Aldridge, Rudy Gay, Patty Mills, Pau Gasol and newcomer DeMar DeRozan, who arrived during the off-season via a trade with the Toronto Raptors for Kawhi Leonard.

A spot featuring Spurs Legends includes George “Ice Man” Gervin, Sean Elliott, Bruce Bowen, David Robinson and another newcomer — recently retired Manu Ginobili.

“So cool to hang out with these guys,” Ginobili posted to his Twitter account, along with a photo of him with the other Spurs Legends. “I’m really on the ‘other side’ now.” He added the hash tags  #hebcommercials and #legends.

On his Twitter account, Robinson offered to Ginobili, “You are now one of us young @Manuginobili. We’ll take good care of you.”

H*E*B also put together a compilation spot featuring outtakes from Ginobili's spots, "Thank-You Manu."

H*E*B, a 112-year-old company with sales topping $23 billion, has a vested interest as a marketing partner with the team.

H-E-B operates more than 390 stores in Texas and Mexico.

The company gets national attention from the spots due to the stars and the creative, from lead agency Richards Group, Dallas, which has received numerous awards.

According to H*E*B, “This continued collaboration between H*E*B and Spurs Sports & Entertainment has led to community investment projects and provided Spurs fans and H*E*B customers with player appearances and fan appreciation events throughout the year.”

The campaign will include TV, Internet, social media, POP and in-arena in AT&T Center, the Spurs home venue.

The spots are scheduled to begin airing later this month.
