One Year Countdown To Special Olympics '14 For Athletes, Supporters, Marketers

June 14, 2013: Organizers,marketing partners and participants and their families, friends and supporters have begun the one-year countdown to the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games, which will be held in New Jersey, June 14-21, 2014.

The Games are expected to include more than 3,500 Special Olympics athletes, who will compete in 16 sports; 1,000 coaches; 10,000 volunteers; and 50,000 family, friends and spectators.

Founding partners for the 2014 Special Olympic USA Games include Barnabas Health, Hess, PSE&G, ShopRite, Toys 'R' Us and WWE.

ShopRite, which recently signed on as the official supermarket of the Games, said it would provide daily lunches, snacks, and beverages for the athletes and volunteers, as well as all floral arrangements for the various receptions and special events throughout the week. ShopRite will also include the 2014 USA Games in much of its promotional efforts over the next year, including broadcast recognition, outdoor signage and in-store exposure.

According to Joseph Colalillo, chairman and CEO for New Jersey-based Wakefern Food Corp., the merchandising and distribution arm for ShopRite stores. “ShopRite has been a proud supporter of Special Olympics for nearly 30 years through the sponsorship of Special Olympics New Jersey Summer & Winter Games. Year after year, we are inspired by the athletes’ determination, enthusiasm and sportsmanship. It is a great pleasure to announce our support of the 2014 USA Games and we look forward to cheering on all participating Special Olympics athletes.”

Toys 'R' Us, Inc. has  launched a year-long campaign to drive awareness for the 2014 USA Games,, anchored by a dedicated Web page. It features a countdown of the days until the Games begin and featuries profiles and videos of Young Athletes and their families.

Throughout the coming year, Toys 'R' Us also said it would encourage its employees and customers to volunteer with Special Olympics in their communities and share stories of participating through its social media channels and other communication vehicles.

Sports competitions will be held at venues throughout New Jersey, including Princeton University, Rider University, The College of New Jersey, Mercer County Park and several area private schools.  Special Olympics athletes will also participate in Special Events including an Opening Ceremony at Prudential Center, Closing Ceremony at Sun National Bank Center, a board-walk themed Olympic Town and a Special Olympics Unified Sports Festival.
