For $400M, SoFi Secures Naming Rights Deal For Los Angeles Rams Stadium

By Barry Janoff

September 15, 2019: Even for Los Angeles and Hollywood, this is a big deal.

The owner of the Los Angeles Rams has signed a 20-year naming rights deal with personal finance company Social Finance — better known as SoFi — for the $5 billion stadium that beginning in 2020 will be home to the Rams and Los Angeles Chargers.

Financial details were not shared but could reach or exceed $20 million annually and $400 million in total, according to industry analysts.

The deal was negotiated by Legends, which is majority-owned by the Dallas Cowboys and New York Yankees.

SoFi Stadium is the centerpiece of Hollywood Park, a 298-acre sports and entertainment destination under the auspices of Rams owner and chairman Stan Kroenke.

“It would be impossible to build a stadium and entertainment district of this magnitude without incredible and innovative partners who share our ambitions for Los Angeles, our fans worldwide and the NFL,” Kroenke said via the team.

“Since breaking ground at Hollywood Park, more than 12,000 people have worked side-by-side on this project, and we are proud to now have SoFi join us on this journey as we prepare to open in the summer of 2020."

SoFi Stadium will be a year-round sports and entertainment destination, hosting Super Bowl LVI in February 2022, the CFB National Championship game in 2023 and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2028 Olympic Games.

Among other activation, SoFi will have branding on the roof and on the 70,000-square foot ring-shaped video board that will be suspended from the ceiling.

LA Stadium and Entertainment District at Hollywood Park last month signed American Airlines as its first partner as well as a Founding Partner for LASED and the official airline of the Rams and Chargers.

As a part of the agreement, the carrier will have exclusive naming rights to American Airlines Plaza, an expansive 2.5-acre two-level open-air space that serves as a main entrance into the stadium and performance venue (rendition pictured).

Financial terms were not released, but were put at $90 million over ten years by industry analysts.

This is second big stadium naming rights deal for a NFL stadium in recent weeks following Allegiant Air $400 million deal for the Raiders new venue in Las Vegas, which will also open for the 2020 season.

“We’re thrilled to be introducing SoFi Stadium to the world, through our partnership with Hollywood Park,” Anthony Noto, CEO for SoFi, said via the San Francisco-based firm.

“This is a giant leap toward achieving our company’s mission of helping people get their money right by reaching our members where they are. The partnership with this transformative project taking shape under Stan Kroenke’s leadership is the perfect opportunity to drive awareness and trust in the SoFi brand as we continue to grow and reach members on a national level.”

According to Kroenke, “It was critical for us to find a tech-focused partner who is on the cutting edge and genuinely understands the needs of all of our constituents and who challenges us to think in creative ways to make every visitor to SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park feel special and at home.”
