Snyder's Of Hanover Puts A Baseball Twist On National Pretzel Day With Players, Icons

Special To NYSportsJournalism.com

April 26, 2016: Snyder's of Hanover is not an official partner with MLB, but the snack brand best known for its variety of pretzels, is making a strong guerrilla effort to make people think it is.

Pretzels are a favorite in MLB ballparks, which Snyder's plans to use to its advantage today, April 26, which is National Pretzel Day.

Throughout the day, current and former players including Chipper Jones, Zack Wheeler (pictured below), Jason Motte, Glen Perkins and Joe Panik will assist Snyder's employees in handing out free bags of pretzels in and around the ball parks in such cities as Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Minneapolis, New York, San Francisco and Washington DC.

Snyder's also said that these and other baseball players would be on their respective Twitter accounts spreading the world about pretzels.

"Hit the sweet spot with my favorite #PretzelsBaby from Snynder's on National Pretzel Day," Wheeler, who pitches for the New York Mets, told followers on his Twitter account.

In addition, Snyder's is directing people to its Facebook and Twitter pages for product giveaways throughout the day and to tag photos or posts on social media using  #PretzelsBaby and #NationalPretzelDay to join in the celebration.

"Snyder's of Hanover pretzels are hearty, crunchy, bold, and baked – they clearly deserve their own national holiday," Rod Troni, CMO for Snyder's-Lance, said in a statement. "We are excited to give thousands of people a chance to get a taste of our delicious Pretzel Pieces on National Pretzel Day."

The annual event began in 2003 when then Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell declared April 26 “National Pretzel Day” to acknowledge the importance of the pretzel to the state’s history and economy.

The annual U.S. pretzel industry is worth over $550 million. On average, people in America consume about 1.5 pounds of pretzels per year, according to snack food associations.

"We love Snyder's of Hanover pretzels, and we want everyone to tell us why they love them too on National Pretzel Day," said Troni. "Today, we're all celebrating pretzels, baby!"
