Richard Sherman Boosts Marketing Visibility With 'Madden NFL 15' Cover Selection

By Barry Janoff

June 9, 2014: The motto of Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman has pretty much been, "I can cover anyone."

Now, he finds himself being covered.

Sherman, who helped to lead the Seahawks to a victory in Super Bowl XLVIII this past February, has been voted as the cover athlete for EA Sports' Madden NFL 15 video game.

The voting began with 16 NFL stars and saw some 9.6 million votes cast during the entire campaign. In the final round, 661,412 votes were cast, of which Sherman received 56% and Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton received 44%.

Sherman is a roll both on and off the field. He recently signed endorsements with Campbell Soup, BodyArmor sports drink and Oberto beef jerky, and last month inked a $57.4 million contract extension with the Seahawks

The Final Four were Sherman, Newton, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and Andrew Luck, quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts.

Head-to-head, Sherman also beat out Alshon Jeffrey and Jimmy Graham during the span of voting en route to the honor. It was unveiled during a live event in L.A. Live on June 6.

"Madden cover! Thank you everyone who voted for me," Sherman posted to his Instagram account.

"Richard Sherman is a fantastic cover selection by the fans. Defense is a big focus for Madden NFL 15, and he is one of the brightest defensive stars in the NFL."

“Richard Sherman is a fantastic cover athlete selection by the fans,” Anthony Stevenson, vp-global marketing for EA Sports, said in a statement. “Defense is a big focus for Madden NFL 15, and Sherman is one of the brightest defensive stars in the NFL.  He shares the same energy and passion for the game as our ‘legion’ of Madden fans.”

Sherman is expected to be the focus of a marketing campaign to include TV, print, Internet and social media.

This was the fourth year that fans and consumers were able to vote for the cover athlete.

A preview trailer for the game featured Carolina Panthers Luke Kuechly. Other players in the competition included Alfred Morris (Washington Redskins), Eddie Lacy (Green Bay Packers) and Antonio Brown (Pittsburgh Steelers).

All player participation has been facilitated by NFL Players Inc., the licensing and marketing subsidiary of the NFL Players Assn.

"I knew going up against Cam was going to be tough competition," Sherman said during the cover unveiling. "It was a grew battle. I glad I cam out on top."

Madden NFL 15 is due to hit stores Aug. 26. EA Sports was named a Top Ten "Sports Marketer of the Year" by NYSportsJournalism for last year's edition, Madden NFL 25, which celebrated the 25th edition of the video game.
