Serena Williams Highest-Paid Female Athlete, But Marketers Still Bank On Men

By Barry Janoff

August 16, 2017: Serena Williams has cemented her reputation as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, athlete on the sports landscape.

Williams was eight weeks pregnant when she won the Australian Open this past January, the 23rd of her Grand Slam titles, She didn’t reveal her pregnancy until after the event, which only added to her accomplishment.

Since then, videos have been posted on social media of her daily tennis workouts. She recently joined the board of directors for SurveyMonkey.

She is in new campaigns for Gatorade, Intel and Tempur-Pedic.

All of that puts her at No. 1 among the highest-paid female athletes in the world, taking in $27 million in winnings and endorsements between June 2016-June 2017, according to Forbes.

Despite not competing on the pro circuit since January, Williams was the highest listed woman among all athletes worldwide in an earlier Forbes list.

But that put her down at No. 51 overall, well behind a Top Five of Roger Federer ($58 million), LeBron James ($55 million), Phil Mickelson ($40 million) Tiger Woods ($37 million) and Ronaldo ($35 million).

In the new study, like Williams, tennis dominates, with eight women tennis players in the Top Ten in earnings.

Angelique Kerber is second ($12.6M total), followed by the only two women in the Top Ten not from tennis: race car driver Danica Patrick at No. 3 ($12 million total) and MMA-star-turned actress Ronda Rousey at No. 4 ($11 million total).

Serena’s sister, Venus, rounds out the Top Five ($10.5M total earnings).

The rest of the Top Ten are all from tennis: Garbille Muguruza, Caroline Wozniacki, Agnieszka Radwanska, Eugenie Bouchard and Simona Halep.

The list includes women athletes who earned $6 million or more during the designated time.

Among those not making the earnings cut-off: tennis players Maria Sharapova (suspension) and Victoria Azarenka (pregnancy), skier Lindsey Vonn, members of the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team, WNBA players and anyone in the LPGA.

By comparison, Beyoncé earned $106 million over the past year, second among worldwide celebrities and musicians behind Diddy ($130 million) and Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling was third with $95 million, per Forbes.

Ellen DeGeneres ($77 million) and singer Adele ($69 million) were also among the Top 20 in earnings.

Williams, whose due-date is expected to coincide with the U.S. Open Grand Slam (Aug. 28-Sept. 10) said her goal is to return to the pro circuit in January to defend her Australian Open title.

"I’ve never had this time off before — or if I have I’ve been injured and it’s really different to be injured as opposed to be expecting," Williams said from her home in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, during a recent media conference call. "I’ve been really enjoying my time off and getting ready for this new massive chapter in my life."
