Samsung Deal Bringing First Live-Stream VR Bout To UFC, Plus X Games, Live Nation

Special to NYSportsJournalism.com

May 30, 2017: Calling it an opportunity for fans and consumers to enhance the experience of sports and music events, Samsung Electronics Co., said it has signed deals to bring its VR Live Pass on Gear VR to the UFC, X Games and Live Nation.

The alliance kicks in with what Samsung said would be the first time in UFC history an event would be live-streamed in virtual reality the UFC 212 bout pitting featherweight champion José Aldo vs. interim featherweight champ Max Holloway, scheduled for June 3 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

According to Ike Lawrence Epstein, UFC COO, "We’ve always felt that the potential of combining UFC events with virtual reality would give our fans the ultimate enhanced experience. We’re excited to partner with Samsung on this game-changing initiative to further revolutionize how fight fans consume our content and live events around the world."

Live-streams of the UFC 212 main card, including the championship main event, will be available in countries where Samsung VR is available. Unfortunately for local fans, that does not include the U.S., where fans will have access only to the UFC FIGHT PASS early prelims.

Samsung said there are more than 4.5 million Gear VR headsets worldwide.

Samsung and UFC are supporting with a spot on social media.

Upcoming VR Live Pass on Gear VR events also include the X Games in U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, July 13-16 (televised on ESPN and ABC) and a Live Nation concert with an as-yet international artist this August.

The VR Live Pass on Gear VR events will be available through the Samsung VR app.

Samsung said it recently expanded its global presence to 45 countries, enabling more consumers around the world to use the Gear VR platform.

"We are excited to offer Samsung Gear VR users the opportunity to experience their favorite live music and sporting events through our industry-leading VR ecosystem,” Younghee Lee, CMO and evp-Samsung Electronics, said in a statement. "Partnering with these companies to expand our VR services helps us to open up a new gateway of opportunities for fans and demonstrate our commitment to delivering experiences that make the seemingly impossible, possible."

"The X Games is the premier action sports event that continually provides a platform for athletic progression," Tim Reed, vp-ESPN X Games, said in a statement. "From never been done tricks to awe-inspiring competition, Samsung’s Gear VR technology is perfect to showcase dynamic action sports to viewers across the world."
