Samsung Eyes Tech-Savvy Fans, Consumers As Exclusive NHL Partner

March 11, 2015: With Samsung coming off a year in which profits dropped by 60% but anticipating better days to come with the release of its Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge in April, the South Korea-based firm plans to be an aggressive player via a new alliance with the National Hockey League that makes Samsung Canada the league's first exclusive partner in the mobile, tablet, and wearable hardware category.

The multi-year deal includes sponsorship across such digital assets as NHL.com, NHL Social and within the NHL app; presenting sponsor of "Inside the NHL Situation Room" videos and the Stanley Cup Playoffs Bracket Challenge; and multi-media marketing on TV, Internet, social media and in arenas.

Financial terms of the pact were not released.

“NHL fans are tech-savvy, the first to know about new trends and products, and they love learning about new technology,” David Lehanski, svp-integrated sales for the NHL, said in a statement. “This is an exciting category to develop engaging content, and we’re thrilled to be working with Samsung, a forward-thinking global technology leader."

The official NHL app is now enhanced with "richer content" on Samsung Galaxy smartphones, allowing fans to personalize their devices through NHL team-branded integrated wallpapers and covers and track information such as schedules, game scores and updates, delivered in real-time.

Samsung said that consumers and fans can now access exclusive NHL content on Galaxy devises including the S6 and S6 Edge,S5, S4, S III, Note Edge, Note 3 and 4 and Note II. Devices  need Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) or later.

According to Paul Brannen, evp-mobile solutions for Samsung Canada, “Working hand-in-hand with the NHL, we have enhanced the mobile experience for the millions of avid hockey fans across Canada, offering them a unique point of view and an unparalleled fan journey. The way fans are watching sports is evolving, and this partnership helps us put the fan at the centre of the action.”

"And this is just the beginning," said the NHL's Lehansk. "Together we will continue to unveil innovative ways to engage hockey fans, bringing them a more personalized experience on the screen of their choice.”

NHL partners in Canada also include Canadian Tire, Crest, Hershey's, Mondelez, Oral-B, Rogers, Tim Horton's and Visa.
