NFL Saints, NBA Pelicans Bring Harrah’s New Orleans To The Sports Betting Table

By Barry Janoff

December 19, 2018: When the Supreme Court in May overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, it opened the door for all states and the District of Columbia to enact legislation approving legal sports betting.

It also was a catalyst for deals between casinos or sports betting firms and pro leagues and teams.

In that vein, the NFL’s New Orleans Saints and NBA’s Pelicans have signed an alliance with Caesars Entertainment naming Harrah's New Orleans “an official casino partner of the New Orleans Saints" and “a proud casino partner of the New Orleans Pelicans."

The Saints and Pelicans are both majority owned by Gayle Benson.

Louisiana does not have legal sports betting, but state legislators are moving in that direction for 2019, which would coincide with the start of the Saints and Pelicans alliance with Harrah’s.

Financial terms of the Saints and Pelicans deal with Caesars Entertainment were not shared.

The Dallas Cowboys, New York Jets, Baltimore Ravens and Raiders (beginning in 2020 in Las Vegas) also have deals with casino groups, the latter two with Caesars Entertainment.

Caesars Entertainment also has deals with the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers  and the NHL’s New Jersey Devils.

According to ownership of the teams, the partnership includes “unique opportunities for Harrah's to bring the Saints and Pelicans experience to life . . . Harrah's will be able to develop customized experiences, in game features, a Saints-branded area on property and be designated as an official post-game destination.”

"We are proud to align ourselves with a brand such as Harrah's New Orleans Casino that is an industry leader not only nationally but on a local level as well," Dennis Lauscha, president for the New Orleans Saints and Pelicans, said via the teams.

“Located in the Heart of Downtown New Orleans, Harrah's vision for development and commitment to the city mirror that of the Saints and Pelicans and we could not be happier about this partnership."

States that currently allow legal sports betting are Delaware, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and West Virginia.

In New Mexico, the Santa Ana Star Casino & Hotel, located on the Pueblo of Santa Ana in Bernalillo, started taking sports bets in October through a tribal gambling compact.

City lawmakers in Washington, D.C., this week voted to legalize sports betting in the District of Columbia, which now requires Congressional approval.

The NBA, NHL and MLB each have official alliances with MGM Resorts International.

On Wednesday, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-New York) and Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) introduced the Sports Wagering Market Integrity Act of 2018.

According to the two senators, the bill would have the U.S. Justice Department “set minimum standards states must meet in order to offer sports betting."

"The partnership includes unique opportunities for Harrah's to bring the Saints and Pelicans experience to life."

The bill would require sports wagering operators use data provided or licensed by the leagues.

It would also provide federal funding from sports betting taxes for programs to address problem gambling.

According to a recent report from the American Gaming Assn., the NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL could realize a combined $4.2 billion in annual revenue.

That would come not just from legal, regulated sports betting, but from such related platforms as increased consumption of the leagues' products, revenue as a result of spending by betting operators and data providers, advertising, sponsorship revenue and data.

According to the AGA, the NFL alone could realize $2.3 billion in increased annual revenue.

Annual revenues for MLB and the NBA have the potential to increase by $1.1 billion and $585 million, respectively, while the NHL  could see an annual bump of $216 million.
