Serena Is Back In Play On The Court And Now . . . Roger Federer At The U.S. Open?

June 8, 2026: The big news in tennis over the past few days aside from Roland-Garros is the return of Serena Williams to the WTA circuit.
Now comes word that another icon will also return, albeit in an exhibition match.
The U.S. Tennis Assn. said that it would hold a “Roger Federer: An Icon Returns to New York” event as part of the 2026 U.S. Open Grand Slam.
The planned doubles exhibition is also scheduled to include tennis legends Andy Roddick, John McEnroe and Andre Agassi. The date is Aug. 25 as part of the tournament’s qualifying week in Arthur Ashe Stadium at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center..
The U.S. Open is scheduled for Aug. 30 - Sept. 13.
“Rger Federer isn’t the only one who’s going to enjoy this,” the U.S. Open posted to its social media platform. “Who’s excited to see The Maestro back on-court at the U.S. Open?”
Later that week, Federer will be part of the International Tennis Hall of Fame induction ceremony, scheduled for Aug. 29 in Newport, Rhode Island, along with Mary Carillo
He retired in 2022.
“So many unforgettable moments of my career happened in New York, and Arthur Ashe Stadium is a place that means a great deal to me,” Federer said via the USTA.
“I’ve missed being part of that atmosphere and feeling the incredible energy that the fans bring every year.”
Federer last played at the U.S. Open in 2019, an event he won five consecutive times (2004-08) — the only man or woman to win five consecutive U.S. Open singles championships — among his 20 Grand Slam titles.
“To return to Arthur Ashe and share the evening with Andy, Andre and John makes it even more meaningful,” said Federer. “I’m looking forward to celebrating those memories, seeing the fans again, and enjoying a very special night together."
Federer has been taking about an exhibition tour with Rafael Nadal, also retried, to support his and Nadal’s philanthropic causes.
“Why not? I love Rafa,” Federer recently told CNBC. “I’ve been trying to keep in good shape. And I know that Rafa is totally open to maybe playing some tennis. It sounds terrible, seniors tennis, to us but maybe we can create a tour like a Fedal Tour or something like that. I mean it would be cool.”
