Boston Red Sox Hit The 2019 Season With New MGM Resorts International Deal

By Barry Janoff

March 8, 2019: MGM Resorts International, already a league partner with MLB, has signed a multi-year deal with the defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox to become the team’s first ”official and exclusive resort casino.’

Marketing support includes the MGM Resorts logo appearing on the Green Monster and “visible messaging” behind home plate in Fenway Park, as well as media buys on Red Sox radio and other team controlled media outlets.

In addition, MGM Resorts will receive :exclusive access to one-of-a-kind fan experiences in Fenway Park."

Financial terms of the pact were not shared.

"This is such a natural partnership for our two brands," Sam Kennedy, Red Sox president and CEO, said via the team.

”MGM has set the standard in the hospitality and entertainment industry and their recent expansion into the Commonwealth makes them a clear partner. We are thrilled to welcome them to the Red Sox family and look forward to a long collaboration."

As part of the alliance, MGM Springfield, located about 90 miles west of Boston, will host various promotional experiences throughout the year, including becoming the new home for the Red Sox' annual Baseball Winter Weekend fan event each January.

The deal between MGM Resorts International and the Red Sox was facilitated by global sports marketing firm Fenway Sports Management, a division of Fenway Sports Group, which includes the Red Sox and Fenway Park among its holdings.

According to Jim Murren, MGM Resorts chairman and CEO, “Combining the two iconic brands of the Red Sox and MGM Resorts will create a new one-of-a-kind fan experience for baseball fans unique to not only New England and MGM Springfield, but the rest of the country.

“We look forward to continuing our work and partnerships in the world of professional sports and building on our success as a worldwide entertainment leader."

This past November, MLB signed a multi-year deal designating MGM Resorts International as the first “official gaming partner" and “official entertainment partner” of MLB.

The “all-inclusive partnership agreement” combines the MLB brand with MGM Resorts and playMGM brands across league and team sponsorships, data usage in gaming, promotion across MLB-owned media platforms, and domestic and international activations at MLB events.

MGM Resorts also has official status with the NBA and NHL.

Sports betting is currently legal in eight states, with Massachusetts among 23 states that have sports betting bills pending, according to the American Gaming Assn.

Pro sports leagues in the U.S. are set to receive a potential $4.2 billion boost in annual revenue, not just from the betting but also from such platforms as advertising, data. merchandise and sponsorship.

AGA said the NFL has the potential to take in more than $2 billion, MLB $1.1 billion, the NBA nearly $600 million and the NHL more than $200 million.

AGA research shows that legal sports betting could help generate additional revenues of $154 million for MLB as a result of spending by betting operators and data providers, that gaming operators may spend $64 million on MLB advertising, sponsorship revenues from gaming operators providing an additional $62 million for MLB and $28 million from data rights.
