Sony Joins San Francisco 49ers Tech, Entertainment Roster At New Stadium

Special to NYSportsJournalism.com

December 11, 2012: The San Francisco 49ers have added another major partnership to the roster for their new stadium, signing Sony to become the official consumer electronics partner for both the club and the New Santa Clara Stadium.

Financial terms of the multi-year agreement were not released.

As part of the pact, Sony also becomes the presenting partner of the 49ers Hall of Fame, which team executives called "an integral part of the fan experience in the new stadium." Sony also is expected to support with multi-media marketing.

The 49ers are scheduled to move from Candlestick Park in San Francisco to the $1.2 billion 68,500-seat stadium, about 45 miles south in Santa Clara, in time for the 2014 NFL season. The stadium does not have a naming rights deal but industry analysts said that could happen before the venue opens, with an annual price tag of as much as $10 million.

This past September, the Niners signed a deal with global business software and analytics firm SAP to become a founding partner at the new venue and the naming rights holder at the team's practice facility. Other founding partners include data storage provider Violin Memory and networking and technology solutions firm Brocade.

According to the team executives, the deal with Sony "centers on maximizing the entertainment value provided to fans, using Sony's advanced technology to create personal, engaging, compelling and interactive experiences for the 49ers Faithful fans, both online and in-stadium."

Among the cutting edge products that will be installed are Sony's 4K Ultra HD displays, which the company said "provides visuals with four times the resolution of full HD."

"Sony has a well-deserved reputation for leading innovation and quality performance, and its all-around leadership in entertainment experiences will help make this stadium the premier outdoor sports and entertainment venue," Jed York, 49ers CEO, said in a statement. "Together with Sony, the 49ers are committed to creating the ultimate game-day experience, as we are building a fan-friendly, technologically-advanced stadium that embodies the finest of Silicon Valley and the Bay Area."

"We are building a fan-friendly, technologically-advanced stadium that embodies the finest of Silicon Valley and the Bay Area."

According to Phil Molyneux, president and COO for Sony Electronics, "As a proud leader and an innovator in entertainment, Sony is pleased to partner with the San Francisco 49ers, proven winners and innovative leaders in football and sports entertainment. We're excited to be part of the team's winning tradition, and will be working closely with the 49ers and its fans to develop in-stadium, at-home, and mobile entertainment experiences for the 49er Faithful that are second to none, not only in the NFL, but anywhere."

The deal was unveiled at a ceremony attended by 49ers President Gideon Yu, Jed York, Sony Music entertainer Jordin Sparks and Molyneux.
