No NHL? No Problem As New York Rangers' Richards Shows He Can Still Score

November 29, 2012: The future of the NHL, currently in its second work stoppage since 2004, may be in the hands of federal mediators, but some players are taking matters into their own hands.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said last week that players as a group are losing between $8-$10 million a day, and that the league itself — which has cancelled games through Dec. 14, as well as the outdoor Bridgestone Winter Class and the All-Star Game — is losing between $18-$20 million a day.

Small wonder that some players, such as Alex Ovechkin and Ilya Kovalchuk have signed with the Kontinental Hockey League in Russia while others are scrambling for roster positions in other international hockey leagues.

Brad Richards, forward and alternate captain for the New York Rangers, has found another area of opportunity.

The 32-year-old has signed a two-year deal with UnTuckIt, a New York-based designer of men's shirts, Tees and polos specifically made to be worn outside pants, aka untucked, "while still looking smart and polished."

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Richard will appear in marketing for the brand and already is featured on the company's Web site, sans hockey gear.

"Brad is known for his sense of style. The fact that he is also a fellow wine connoisseur makes him the perfect ambassador for UnTuckIt.”

Among Richards interests beyond hockey is wine, a passion he shares with UnTuckIt CEO and founder Chris Riccobono. As a result, each style in the UnTuckIt collection is named after a wine, including the Nebbiolo, the Valpolicella and the Medoc.

"When the opportunity came up for me to be the face of UnTuckIt, I was very excited,” Richards said in a statement. “I’m a big believer that style should be comfortable and I need to wear clothing that fits right. This is what makes UnTuckIt so unique — the fit is always perfect.”

Richards, an 11-year veteran of the NHL, had 25 goals and 41 assists last season, his first with the Rangers following almost seven campaigns with the Tampa Bay Lightning, including 2003-04 when the Lightning won the Stanley Cup and Richards was named MVP of the playoffs; and three-plus years with the Dallas Stars.

According to Riccobono, “I’ve always been a huge sports fan, and as a New Yorker, I’m a big Rangers and Richards fan. Brad is known for his sense of style. The fact that he is also a fellow wine connoisseur makes him the perfect ambassador for UnTuckIt.”
